Why would anyone suggest that you not promote your Network Marketing or MLM business too much?

Well, let me ask you something here:
Are you trying to make more money for yourself and your team OR would you rather see more money and attention brought to the company you are promoting?

That may seem like a dumb question, but the WAY you are marketing and promoting your business says more about that subject than your response to it.

In other words, if you spend the majority of your time talking about or promoting the actual company you represent instead of YOURSELF, what is the message you are actually portraying to your prospects?

It is this:
'This company is so great - the products sell themselves, the compensation plan is killer, the founders have the biggest heart, and on and on, but getting you in my company is what I'm trying to do here'

So, where exactly do you come in? What makes you needed if the company is so great and that's all you are talking about; why would people be attracted to you personally?

In essence, you are simply a glorified sales rep and not a true independent marketer, doing it this way.

(Now, please don't get upset and close your mind here. Just hear me out and make your own decision at the end of this article.)

This brings up questions like: If the products sell themselves, why does your company need you? If the comp plan is the best, then why are there people in other networking companies making more than people in your company? If this is such a great opportunity, then why do you need to track people down to tell them all about how great it really is? Why do so many networkers talk more about their company and products than they do their own children?

The deal is, your company does need you because you bring in the key component that they may not be able to achieve on their own - which is relationships and creative marketers.

Getting back to the main point here:
* Instead of spending so much time promoting and building up a company you represent, wouldn't it be a better business decision to promote and build up YOURSELF more?

What if you switched gears and instead of attracting and linking people to your network marketing company; you attracted and linked people to YOU, and then had the power to control where you direct and lead those people?

Something that happens quite a bit in this business is companies that up and close all of a sudden or get raided by the FDA or the Government, or have a financial crisis, or change the comp plan, etc.

Just the same is the fact that your prospects now have many great mlm companies and products to choose from and can be much more selective about who they deal with in their decision of those companies.

What this means to you is that if you are not attracting people to you FIRST, people have no real reason to join in business with you specifically.

What do you have to offer that any other rep doesn't have?

So, let me give an example here. Say you have a prospect who you are trying to get as a rep in your business:

You paint this awesome picture of your company (all the benefits and features) to your prospect and try to get them involved.

Well, they decide for whatever reason, that they do not want to become a rep with your company and they move on.

You have just lost your chance with that prospect because all you had to offer them was your opportunity and nothing more. They will not come back to you unless they decide they want to join that particular company, and even then they might find a crossline rep they like more than you and join with them. They have no other use for you, and you have no more attractiveness to them.

Now, what about this:
Contrast this by attracting people to you FIRST (by positioning yourself as an expert in your field) and giving them something of value (such as a free informational generic newsletter, ebook, webinar, etc.) and then directing them to the course that is best for them including your primary business.

Doing it this way can allow you to be attractive to prospects at all times, and even if they don't join you in your primary business, they are still connected with you and not just sold on your company. They trust you and consider you more of a help than of a annoying sales rep who thinks their particular company is the best thing out there.

It's very easy to find network marketers who are in love with their company and spend all of their time praising their company and it's products, conventions, and all of that stuff.

However, it's rare when you find someone who attracts people to them first through correct positioning, and is able to more effectively help prospects above and beyond their business opportunity.

Sure we should be proud to represent the company we are with, but they are not the be all end all. They are merely a means to an end. If you are a true independent marketer, you don't have to rely so much on driving every person to your primary company because you are bringing people to you first, then you have the chance to help them much more than just getting them in your business opportunity. You have much more to offer.

Not only that, but regular network marketers are a dime a dozen. People don't want to work with the average Joe networker. Why would they, anyway (the statistics of the masses are terrible)? People want to deal with someone who they can trust and someone who can give them more information than just the typical sales pitch of their particular company that every other rep is also using. I mean, most everyone says their particular company is the best, their 'system' is the best, yada, yada. Who really cares? Prospects have heard it all before. They want results and they want someone who is different and who gives before they get.

You are either independently unique, or you are simply following the followers.

It was also self-evident that this so called Free Trade had a long history of failures. This did not stop President Bill Clinton from pushing for more the same. He neglects to tell the American people that even though thousands of U.S. factories were moved to Mexico, the Mexicans would not take the jobs that pay only about a $1 an hour and fled to the USA seeking better wages. In effect, Mexican workers are refusing jobs in Mexico. Now many of these factories are moving out of Mexico to places like China where there are workers who are willing to work for less. As far as wars go, in effect President Clinton started a pre-emptive war in the Balkans. He gave the Serbians an ultimatum that everyone knew the Serbians could not comply with. In trying to stop ethnic cleansing, President Clinton ended up in doing his own version of it. When the U.S. went into Yugoslavia, more about 750,000 Serbians and Gypies had to flee for their lives. They flocked to Belgrade and many also went to Kosovo only to have to flee again after the U.S. military went into Kosovo. President Clinton then bombed civilians in Belgrade. Nothing is right in the Balkans after all this with one power just replacing another one. Bosnia became a training area for terrorists with many ending up in Iraq. President Clinton let these fighters come to Bosnia in the first place during the war . Actually, the whole scenario is a forecast of what will now happen in Iraq. One power will replace another one with more terrorism and not less as the by-product.

After a number of weeks, I got through to AARP.

Im an impatient man. I cant wait forever for an agent to come online. If I dont get cut off automatically, I dont hang around if my lunchtime comes and goes while waiting.

This morning I decided to try a brand new strategy. I would call in the morning.

After some fiddling around with the buttons, Chris came on the line. She is in Stockton, California. I was so surprised to hear an AARP human I dropped my cocoa into my lap causing me to dance around my desk. That added to the joy of hearing a fellow human being from AARP.

Chris enrolled me into the MedicareRx plan. That is she started the process. She transferred me to Amy who verified the information needed. We then went through the same procedure with my wife. Before I talked to Amy, I had to listen to a very long spiel about the plan. I had to agree that I understood the spiel and that I agreed to its terms. Suddenly, we were both enrolled. I couldnt believe it.

Well, there is a two-week wait for the plan to come through. I selected the option that lets Social Security deduct the MedicareRx Plan premiums.

I carry supplemental insurance with AARP. Ive always enjoyed the way they pay every single penny of my medical expenses beyond what Medicare pays.

Well, there was one exception. One of my specialist doctors does not except checks from Medicare or AARP. I get the checks and then pay his bill. The checks do not cover the bill because he wants an extra 20%. I heard that some doctors want the extra 15%. Whatever! Anyway, who wants to pay extra?

Anyway, Im changing from Specialist A to Specialist B. Specialist B accepts Medicare payments. Besides, Specialist A scared the heck out of me during a medical test. Also, he is always seems to be in a big hurry and

Yesterday the Humana agent came to the house. He explained the Humana plan available here in Idaho. They are the new guys on the block as they move west across the country. They still have the West Coast states to harness.

The Humana plan looked good to me. However, I feel safer with my AARP plan that pays everything without co-pays and all that stuff. For a healthy couple, Humana would be just fine and less costly. You only pay for services as you use them with Humana.

Each of the above statements about Humana assumes that I understood what the agent was talking about. A more definitive analysis would require six weeks study on my part of the service pack he left me.

Anyway, the reason I decided to join the MedicareRx plan is that after you get through the GAP that occurs when your drug cost reach $2250.00 and ends when your drug cost reach $3600.00, you are covered to infinity. My AARP drug plan ends when the total cost are $6250.00. There is no GAP however with AARP.

You have to decide. As ARRP states, if you think that you someday will need coverage beyond the GAP, you might consider MedicareRx. The other factor is your total drug cost. I reduced my cost by going to MedicareRx. The reason is the dramatic cost of my AARP supplemental plan when I remove drug coverage cost.

Now lets talk about the GAP in the MedicareRx plan. Why is there a GAP and why is it so huge?

The GAP in MedicareRx is called the doughnut hole. It is the reason that so few eligible people have joined MedicareRx. The GAP was designed because Congress just loves (to bilk) the taxpayers of our country. They did not want drug cost to get out of hand.

Ill tell you where the cost got out of hand. It is the $2 billion windfall given to the drug tsars by the MedicareRx Plan.

Im not too bitter.

1. Vision. You need to know who you are, what you're doing, why, etc. This will define how you market your product, how it looks over all, and all the little details within that you need to do. Yep, so figure that out and then go nuts because you can't go wrong with a big idea, as long as you know what the big idea is.

2. Marketing. Its essential in todays design world. You might have a good product but if its weak on branding, labeling, packaging, shelf appeal, matching coat hangers, etc., it'll look bad. Consistency also needs to be achieved across the spectrum including same font, same style, etc. Designing is totally open to new creations and ideas, so anything goes, but there are some boundaries that you don't want to cross, while others you need to break through.

3. E-commerce. Yes, its fully possible! It will take some setting up though, but Ive recently realized how I can just pick up the phone and order a set of hoodies, wait four days until they're on the doorstep, pay for them a month later online, etc. Also, I can call up the fabric company down the road, or one in wellington, get them to send me samples of denim, call them back and order a set amount of denim to be sent to my garment manufacturer, and then call him and tell him how many of what I want right from my rocking chair at home.

4. Online selling. Totally possible if you use ebay or know how to set up an E-commerce website yourself, but getting the credit card system sorted out is a major cost. Lots of girls shop online now, you just need to know how to market it right and get your products noticed.

5. Promo. Get it out there! Make sure your friends buy your products or you could give out freebies. Put stickers, advertising your shop, wherever you can. Be shameless because designers are really admired (as opposed to being a 'salesperson'), especially if your product is favorable.

6. Don't waste your time on silly details. I'll let you figure out what those are.

7. Get your accounts sorted out now. Segregate your personal and business spending, so you can claim back GST with no problems. Make sure every transaction (sales, purchasing, spending, etc.) goes through your account, so you can see how well youre doing by looking at your bank statement. Use the ATM machine for petty cash; your accountant will love you one day for this.

8. Have fun! Its not the end of the world if it doesn't work out. I was just thinking how involved my life is at the moment with my T-Shirt business. My life revolves around it, which is crazy, but if it all fell apart and closed down tomorrow Id be the same person and Id find something else to do! I make sure I take one day off during the week to do what I love that doesnt involve my work. I love doing my work, so Im very lucky in that aspect, but sometimes it gets boring or tedious so I make sure I stay fresh and focused.

9. Work hard. I still do after three years. I work my butt off and hardly make any money off it, but I know its worth it in the long run and the things you learn along the way are invaluable.

Having an adequately equipped home office is essential to being productive. It is not necessary that everything be brand new, nor is it necessary that you spend a lot of money. What is important is that you select your items carefully and that they are functional and safe for use in a home office environment.

Check your telephone directory for used office furniture stores. Many time you can find very nice furniture available at a fraction of the cost. Don't forget to also check the resale store and thrift shops in your area, as well as the local classified ads.

1. The Desk

Bigger is better when it comes to desks. Try to choose one that has lots of room for your computer monitor, keyboard, telephone, and space to spread out paperwork and anything else that you may be working on at the moment. Pick a desk that has adequate drawer space and a file drawer for short-term filing of active projects.

This is the most common file cabinet. Vertical cabinets are taller than they are wide so that they use a minimum amount of wall space. They have anywhere from two to five drawers and are the right size to hold hold letter and legal-size documents. They come in a variety of colors and gauges of steel. If you can afford to buy one that is fireproof, so much the better.

b) Lateral file cabinets

Lateral cabinets are wider than vertical cabinets, but not as deep, and are designed for high-volume storage capacity. They have anywhere from two to five drawers and can hold letter or legal-size documents. Files are either placed in the cabinet from left to right, facing the side of the drawer, or are arranged from front to back in multiple rows.

Many two-drawer lateral models are designed to fit underneath work surfaces and tables for additional storage and are often paired with a desk to increase horizontal space. Again, if you find one that is fireproof, and you can afford it, snap it up.

4. Bookshelves

Bookshelves should be made of wood or metal. Avoid the fiberboard ones since they are flimsy and do not stand up to repeated usage. Like file cabinets, bookshelves come in vertical and lateral. Avoid vertical ones that stand too tall. There is a chance of them becoming top-heavy and falling over. Pay particular attention to this warning if you live in an earthquake area or if you have small children which may delight in climbing to the top of your bookcase.

5. Work Tables

Worktables are great for spreading out large projects that your desk is not big enough to accommodate. If you have enough home office space for a permanent work table, that's great. Otherwise consider buying a folding table that you can take out when you need it and store away when you do not.

6. Storage

Closets, garages, attics and crawl spaces make great places to store completed projects and home office paperwork if the space is not damp or subject to high humidity. If storage is a real problem then you might need to consider renting an off-premise storage locker.

Think of your office furniture as the foundation of your productivity center. It is likely that you will have to live with your decisions for some time. Choose wisely. Your personal comfort, and ability to remain organized, depend upon it. Instead, the most effective PPC ads take clickers to a tightly focused landing page a page specifically developed and matched to the subject of the search, with minimal distractions, a strong call to action and a well thought out process for moving the searcher to the next step, whether thats requesting information, signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

Mistake #2 Dont Bid Enough to Secure a Top Spot
PPC works on an auction model, giving you, the advertiser, the option of deciding how much you want to pay for a particular search term. In effect, you can choose how high up in the ad listings you want to appear. All else equal, the more you pay relative to other advertisers, the higher up your ad will be.

Popular search terms can have a dozen or more ads listed in order on search results pages, giving the impression that anyone can drive clicks with PPC. But consider this startling statistic: 85% of all PPC clicks are on ads in one of the top three positions. The remaining ads whether there are five more or fifty share the scraps.

In practice, that means that unless you bid high enough to get into one of the top three spots, youre wasting your time. Youre not wasting money since if nobody clicks you pay nothing, but if you choose to be hidden further down the list, youll have trouble generating the leads you want to close the sales you need.

Fix #2: Choose search terms and manage bids in such a way that youll consistently appear in one of the top three spots.

Mistake #3 Dont Make Your Ad Copy Specific
Yahoo allows you 190 characters (including spaces) in your text ad. Google allows just 70. No pictures, no colors, no company logo just a few words.

Many advertisers waste this precious space with vague, meaningless terms or general statements that dont clearly explain the uniqueness of their offering. When that occurs, one of two things can happen both of which are bad.

The first is that searchers dont click on your ad. Again, it doesnt cost you anything but it doesnt help you meet your objectives either.

The second bad thing is much worse, since in this case, it costs you both time and money: The wrong searchers click. In other words, your ad causes clicks, but those who click thanks to poorly written ad copy are not good candidates for your product or service. You pay for the clicks, but the leads go nowhere.

Fix #3: Be specific and unique in your ad copy. If youve got patented or otherwise unique features, a particular market or application expertise, unusually friendly return policies or warranties, or something else that sets you apart, this is the place to mention it.

Mistake #4 Dont Align Your Landing Page with Searchers Keywords
Heres how the ideal PPC sequence should work:

A searcher goes to Google and inputs the search term red widget. Your ad pops up and the term red widget is in both its headline and in the ad copy. The searcher clicks on your ad (because youre in one of the top three spots) and arrives at a landing page that is specifically about red widgets.

No confusion, no hesitation, no wondering if maybe this isnt the right place after all. The searcher is systematically taken down a Keyword Flow path from start to finish.

The important thing to keep in mind is that web searchers have lots of options and are presented with lots of data. Together, this leads to impatience and a tendency to abandon any search that doesnt quickly and easily lead to a desired result.

Fix #4: Make sure your landing pages stay focused on the key words which bring clickers there in the first place (you may have several landing pages, simply to ensure Keyword Flow). Youll increase clicks, increase conversions and as a result, increase ROI.

Mistake #5 Dont Bother With Testing
One of the things that makes PPC advertising so compelling particularly for those with limited ad dollars is that it is instantly and perfectly testable. Unlike an ad in the newspaper, on the radio, in a trade journal or in any of the other traditional, offline media, PPC dollars are trackable. Not only can you tell which words were clicked on, you can follow the click all the way through to a completed conversion (newsletter sign-up, literature request, sale, etc.).

Its critical, therefore, to constantly and continually test PPC results tinkering with or discarding the keywords, ads and landing pages that dont work and making improvements along the way. You will not get everything right from the start, thats guaranteed. But thanks to the data that PPC advertising generates, you have the ability to fine-tune the process and continually improve your ROI.

Fix #5: Test, test, test. Its easy to do and with a bit of focused attention, you can improve your results dramatically.

Don't make the mistake of overlooking the importance of a home-business friendly environment. It may even determine your level of success.

The following list constitutes some items that are of the utmost importance when setting up your home office. Many people often overlooked these when starting a home business.

LOCATION: Where you set up your home office will depend on your particular situation, but if at all possible use a spare room. Your best bet will be to set yourself off from the rest of the house in order to afford you some privacy. If this isn't an option in your home, try to find the next best place where this could be accomplished. You need not be totally secluded from all intrusions, but you'll want the option to be able to keep distractions to a minimum when necessary.

LIGHTING: If your office has a window you'll receive natural lighting during the day. But if you plan to work in the evening or you don't have the option of using a window, you will want to provide good artificial light that's friendly to the eyes. Special light fixtures and bulbs made just for reading are readily available and could make a world of difference for a few extra dollars. Whether you choose overhead fluorescent lights, desk lamps or another type of fixture, be sure your office has plenty of good lighting.

Once again, you can find some really good deals if you keep your eyes open for them. Also, be sure to replace your chair when the padding is worn or you may start experiencing increasing back pain over time.

SUPPLIES: Know beforehand what you are going to need to run your business smoothly and then always try to have them readily available. It is inevitable that at some point you are going to run out of that thing you forgot to pick up at the store at just the wrong time. Nothing defeats productivity more than having to stop mid-stream, go pick up supplies and then try to get started back on your project again.

ORGANIZATION: I know that no matter how well-organized an office starts out being, there are some people that are just not going to let it stay that way. They aren't, and never have been, organized themselves. With that said, do your best when setting up your office to keep organization in mind. Have the things you use often close by. Try to keep your files in the same location so that when you need to locate one, it's where its' supposed to be and you won't find yourself running all over the house looking for it.

As for filing, this can be the worst and most-dreaded (but necessary) part of office work. My best advice: keep up with it. Set aside one time-slot each week to do the filing, or any other type of paperwork drudgery that's necessary to keep it from piling up around you. Your job will be must easier in the long run.

PHONES: Depending on the type of business you have, the phone system you choose may not be a major issue. If you rely heavily on your telephone, find one with the functions you need. Likewise, if the phone is merely a source of interruption to you, then invest in a phone that offers a built-in messaging system. For many home business owners, a standard cordless phone is sufficient for their office also. A word to the wise: keep an "old-fashioned" corded phone on hand to use during power outages.

COMPUTER: If you rely on your computer for your home business, get the best one you can afford. It need not be expensive, but it MUST be reliable. If all that you can afford right now is a PC that's considered to be outdated & slow, so be it-as long as it won't cost you more money and time in repairs than you cannot afford while you're just starting your business. Old & slow is fine for the interim, but beaten & broken is not. You don't need major technical problems rearing their ugly heads while you're in the middle of a project. When you can work it into your budget, upgrade to something a little more current, but don't settle for something in the meantime that isn't reliable.

IN CONCLUSION: Most everything you have in your office, from your chair to the lights, will affect your productivity in some way. While staying within your budget, try to get good equipment and furniture. Keep in mind that many of these items can be purchased second-hand. Along that line, eBay is another option to keep in mind. For The Next Twenty-Three Years

I have been a practicing public accountant for twenty-three years. I cant think of anything I would rather do to make a living (except for professional golf maybe) and consider myself quite fortunate. The one thing that I have come to dislike is the way people act. This will include clients as well as other accountants practicing in the trade. Accounting firms are very cheap these days and beat their staffs unmercifully. Eighty-five hours plus a week are the norm during tax time with a stressful killer schedule for the rest of the year. As for the clients, they wine and complain and expect to be treated as if the accountant is the indentured servant. Never again will I put up with cheap owners and overbearing and demanding clients.

The fees at the se firms are too high relative to the benefit received. Tax preparation has become a compliance exercise with very little time given to being proactive and planning ones financial future. When I was reviewing returns at my last job, I would often make suggestions on steps the client could take to save more on taxes and strengthen their respective portfolios. Oh My God I thought as my opinions and concerns fell upon deaf ears. My colleagues, the very people I thought would share my enthusiasm for practicing our noble trade, tossed me to the side and told me to stick with the routine. People want to be dealt with on their time tables and it is more important to meet this goal than it is to offer major tax planning ideas. I think some clients just like to watch their accountant bow and jump through hoops when they come-calling. I once had a colleague tell me that he would bleed for a client. Not this boy. I know that high fees are frustrating, but the client should take a more active role in his or her tax planning and preparation and be willing to go on extension to encourage proper planning. As for the heads of these accounting firms, cut back on your client base maybe to match with the manpower on hand. There are fewer people going into public accounting and this will be a fact of life for the next generation. As for the $125 bonus my last firm gave me after tax season, it in no way rewarded me for the lack of work life benefit that was promised.

For the next twenty-three years, I am going to revolutionize the way we deal with getting accounting help. I am taking my message to the people on radio and will tell you want you want to know and how to do your own financial and income tax planning. I will help you run your business, educate your children, build your portfolio, and save for retirement. There will be no wining tolerated by the listeners and no bowing from me. I will encourage the people to prepare their own tax returns and to seek help from me when they are stuck. This is how I intend to practice the trade I so dearly love over the next twenty-three. My guess is, many would like to see a change in the way they receive financial guidance.

September 11 Remembered

The skies were clear and blue across the nation on the day that plumes of white and gray smoke rose over lower Manhattan.

Although many people were in our office building on that morning, it seemed quiet and empty. Radios in cubicles conducted a somber commentary about the unfolding horror as a crowd of coworkers huddled around a small television on the countertop. Some individuals sat in isolation, making phone calls in an effort to contact friends and family. Others went home early, picking up children from school so they could be with their families. And still others, with no family members to go home to, stayed in the office building and the comfort of being with familiar faces. Each person reached out in their own way to be together with a family member, a friend, a coworker or the memory of someone.

It is hard to imagine how it must have been for the hundreds of people who had started September 11 in the World Trade Centers as just another day at work. How much had those collective individuals contributed to the lives of the people that they had touched? How much more could they have done in these years that have passed?

The men and women of the New York Police Department and Fire Department epitomized the ultimate self-sacrifice during and after the collapse of the buildings. Their bravery, single minded focus and unrelenting efforts continued past the point of human exhaustion during the search for life in the rubble.

The nameless masses of strangers epitomized the spirit of New York and the soul of humanity. Countless stories of delivery truck drivers that used their vehicles to shuttle people anywhere they wanted to go, families who opened their hearts and their homes to give travelers a place to stay, and heroes who pulled or carried others to safety without ever knowing their names.

Most people have vivid personal memories of what they were doing at the exact moment that this tragedy occurred. Many of us can remember how we held our friends and family a little closer in the days and weeks that followed. There was a greater unspoken appreciation for the life and love that can be taken so unexpectedly. There was a greater understanding of how coworkers and neighbors can be shelter in times of trouble.

As we remember the bravery and the strength of human character that was portrayed by the citizens of New York, we should also remember the closeness shared with those around us. There was no shame or embarrassment in expressing compassion. What a beautiful way to honor the memory of the lives of the innocents lost in the tragedy of September 11, to make a conscientious effort to recognize those people who are an important part of your life. Don't take a chance on regret, take time to express your appreciation today.

Instead of focusing on individual sales, they go immediately for ads that promise thousands of visitors, pay-per-click search engines that could potentially expose them to thousands, and even sloppily-produced and sometimes fraudulent spam submission programs.

Even though it is essential to increase your rating with search engines, to purchase pay-per-clicks, and to participate in link exchanges and banner exchanges, discussion forums can often provide an extra, non-conventional sales medium to your campaign that allows you to quickly pull in customers with personal contact and conversational presentations of your product.

You can find these boards by searching for the specific product you sell and then adding the word messageboard or forum or discussion forum after it in quotations. For instance, I sell marketing tools and online business-builders on one of my websites, so when I look for forums to market my products in, I go to google or overture and type in business messageboard or marketing forum. Find as many of these highly-trafficked forums as you can and sign-up. Some of them will require you to confirm it through your email address.

Before you begin actually posting on the boards, you need to lay down some general rules of approach. I would suggest the following methods, but you can decide for yourself what you think is appropriate for your business and situation.

When I market on discussion forums, I always try to provide more for the board than I take away from it in potential sales. Not only is it ethical, but its also good business. When people ask questions, I use the expertise Ive gained from Internet business-building and marketing to legitimately answer their questions. If I signed up for every board I could find, and then slapped a boilerplate marketing pitch on every site, Id just get ignored or banned.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to legitimately get involved with the forum community. It is definitely a goldmine for highly-targeted customers and it is possibly the fastest marketing medium on the Internet, but it is also very important to respect that it doesnt primarily serve as an ad host. If you stay low-key and helpful, people will respect your opinion more and will want to see what you have to offer. This is where your signature comes in...

When you create your account for most boards, they will give you the option of creating a signature, which they will attach to the bottom of every post you make. This is the best way to pull customers from messageboards--by alluring them with your signature. Write something catchy or intriguing and then slap a link to your site or email address on it. Remember: the more helpful you are (the more times you post advice/hints), the more times your signature appears... and the more potential hits youll get to your site.

Next, youll want to decide when its appropriate to market outside of your signature. I personally only market in three situations outside of my signature in forum discussions. If a person asks a question about a specific product or service I market, then Ill respond because Im qualified to do so and because I truly believe they should use my products to achieve the best possible results. If theres a discussion thread where everyone is marketing products and it is generally accepted, I will market my product if a) it is related and b) I have already posted several times on the messageboard. Also, I will market my product whenever there is a forum solely dedicated to marketing your products.

Last, youll want to decide how much original content you want to post and how much you want to be boilerplate. Youll want to find a healthy combination of the two to avoid being called a spammer or wasting too much time marketing on forums. I personally have several boilerplate ads that I have saved for signature files, ad-only forums, and personal product marketing discussions. I keep them all saved on a word file and I pull them up to copy-and-paste when Im spending a night of advertising on messageboards.

Discussion forums can drive buying customers to your site faster than any other marketing medium. Do not abuse them, establish a reputation in your forums, streamline the process. . . and your work will come back to you quickly in profit.

Barbara's Ovarian Cancer Story, Part III

Barbara's continued Ovarian Cancer Story:

Its been two years since my last article and I have a lot to share with you. Presently, Im sitting in my cozy little office/guest room, in my cozy house on Whidbey Island, Washington. Rosie-the-cat is reclining on the windowsill and were both staring out at the wind-whipped trees and billowing, dark clouds being blown across the sky. Its very beautiful and Im very grateful to be here!

At my last writing, I had just completed eight cycles of heavy-duty chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer and was in remission, ready to celebrate a very special Thanksgiving with my family. (See articles 1 and 2 on the articles page at www.dstress.com.) Those holidays were wonderful. I felt healthy, had hair, was working and exercising and planning my retirement date, (September 2005), and subsequent move to our home in Washington. Being an inveterate planner/list-maker and worrier, I organized the retirement and move to within an inch of its life. I knew when my last day of work would be; how much vacation time I had on the books and what day wed be packing up. John made his plans to close his office and relocate his business. We were done with cancer and ready to move on! Well, as we all know, life has a way of not always going according to plan. We were about to be thrown a real curve-ball.

In March, we took a great trip to Arizona to celebrate my birthday. On the drive from Phoenix to Bisbee to visit friends, we marveled at the lush green desert, abloom with flowers after recent rains. Locals told us that this beauty lasted about two weeks before fading to gold and brown, and people had learned not to take it for granted. Well, thats true about anything, isnt it?

The day after we returned from our vacation, a message on the answering machine said a new suspicious mass had been found on my most recent CT scan, the one I had done before we left for Arizona. I was devastated and furious and terrified! I ranted and I raved and I screamed, scaring John and the cat. What about my plans? My retirement? Moving to my new home? What about my life? I dont want more surgery, more chemo! I dont want to lose my hair again! I feel fine and healthy- how can this be happening AGAIN? I had taken for granted that the first surgery and chemo had worked and I was cured. But in fact, 70-90% of people have recurrence at some point in time. I just didnt think I would be one of them. I had to completely let go of my carefully orchestrated master-plan and face this challenge head on.

June found me back at UCSF for major surgery for removal of a tumor that was very close, but not on, the liver. Because ovarian cancer cells tend to migrate to the spleen and gallbladder, they also removed those organs. I was lucky to have access to one of the best surgeons in the country and post-op reports stated that they had completely removed all the cancer! I used all the same tools to prepare pre op and postoperatively as I had for my first surgery and my recovery was good. I was home in five days and back to work in five weeks. I started chemo in July.

On December 1, 2005, I had my last chemo cycle. Other than a very low blood count (I was very anemic and my white count was very low), I tolerated the treatments fairly well. Acupuncture, visualization, exercise and supplements all played an important part in my work to stay as strong and healthy as possible. My hair thinned considerably, but I didnt have to wear wigs or cover-ups. With the particular drug regimen I was on, there is a 60% chance of hair loss. Before treatments started, I researched the web for any products that might minimize this side effect. I found a product called E.V.P.3 Chemaid. The website is:www.evp3.com. It provides good information and research so I decided to give it a try. I dont know if it was the chemaid, the different type of drugs regimen and dosage, supplements or all of the above, but I kept the majority of my hair. Seems like such a minor thing when you are fighting for your life. Yet sometimes those small things make a difference in quality of life. I felt that I looked healthier and normal and that translated into not feeling like a cancer patient.

The new year brought new resolution to finally make our plans to retire and move. My labs were good, my scans were clear and we moved to Whidbey Island in May. Weve been involved in projects ever since.

First on the agenda was painting the inside and the outside of the house. Just as John and I have been a good team in my healing process, weve made a good team in working on our home. And its been fun! We dug a garden using picks and shovels. We built planter boxes and created a Zen rock garden; we yanked out a huge juniper bush and planted roses and dahlias. At the end of the day we collapsed into recliners with such a good feeling of accomplishment. Ive never used my muscles like that before. Id be exhausted by 8pm-it was such a good kind of tired. One of my favorite activities was sitting in the dirt, pulling weeds. The sun on my shoulders, eagles soaring overhead, the smell of earth and flowers and growing things became a huge part of my healing process. I visualized my immune system plucking out and disappearing any unhealthy cells from my body with each weed I pulled. Working in the garden has become a wonderful meditation for me. I clear my mind and totally focus on the task at hand. Learning how to live in the moment is an ongoing lesson, and I have to continually find a balance between artful planning and my natural tendency to organize the future. Ive learned a greater appreciation of each sunrise and sunset. I notice the rhythm of my breathing and muscle movement when I walk and hike. I take time to pick up interesting bits of wood from the beach and decorate my garden with them. I revel in the love of my family and dear friends. I consciously practice NOT taking anything for granted and I try to live each moment joyfully. I have a favorite mantra that I recite to myself on my daily walks. thank you for all the blessings I enjoy; thank you for my health today; thank you for my family and friends; thank you for allowing me to spend time in this beautiful place; thank you for the gift of life! And wouldnt it be very, very nice if abundance cascades into my life and into those I love-abundance of health-physical, emotional and spiritual; and financial abundance.

I wish I could say that with all the meditation and mantras, I now lead a joyful, positive life. The truth is that I have my ups and downs; my incredibly joyful moments along with times of fear, sadness and anger. I go into worry-mode when its time for lab work and waiting for results. I get fearful about any new ache or pain (does this mean the cancer is back?) I vacillate between should I go ahead and spend money on redoing the kitchen now or keep that money in savings a little longer. Sometimes I feel caught between living in the moment and wanting to plan future projects for next year, two years from now, five years from now. And I still get angry that this happened to me, even though Ive learned many lessons in the past few years. One of the main lessons Im starting to grasp is that life is an act of faith. When I was planting the garden, I mostly put in vegetables and flowers that would reward me with bouquets and crops right away. My act of faith in the future was planting a cherry tree. My daily prayer is that Ill be around to enjoy the blossoms and pluck the cherries.

This year we will celebrate Thanksgiving in our new home. Well share our gratitude with friends and family; well feast and watch football; and well toast to health, happiness and prosperity. The garden hibernates now beneath a blanket of red and gold leaves. The tulips, daffodils and hyacinths I planted last week rest and wait until its their time to burst forth into colorful splendor. And I rest, write, clean closets and enjoy indoor projects as I wait for spring, when Ill burst out to nurture and be nurtured in my garden.

Heres to rainy days and warm fires NOW and digging in the dirt in the FUTURE.

The Charter School Wars --- Why Public Schools Hate Charter Schools

Many public school authorities hate charter schools. It's not hard to see why.

Charter schools embarrass local public schools because they often do a better job educating children, for less money. For example, in the 1999-2000 school year, Ohio charter schools got $2300 less per pupil in tax funds than local public schools. Charter schools therefore spotlight regular public schools failure to educate students with more tax money at their disposal.

Charter schools also take money away from public schools. Every child that transfers to a charter school makes the child's former public school lose an average of $7500 a year in tax money. This tax money is the life-blood of public schools. It is the source of their power, of their very existence.

Finally, public-school authorities like their monopoly power over our children's education. Charter schools are free from much of the regulations and controls that regular public schools have to put up with. Charter schools therefore threaten the public school monopoly because they introduce a little competition into the system.

So what do angry or frightened local school districts do in response? School authorities often harass charter schools by reducing their funding, denying them access to school equipment or facilities, putting new restrictions on existing charter schools, limiting the number of new schools, or weakening charter-school laws.

They harass charter schools in other ways. For example, they create convoluted application procedures or dont give new-school applicants enough time to process their applications. They also use city agencies, zoning boards, or fire departments to harass the schools with regulations. For example, the Washington DC school district harassed a local charter school with an asbestos removal issue that forced the school to spend over $10 million in renovation costs. Local school districts have an arsenal of regulatory guns with which to harass charter schools, or reduce their numbers.

Teacher unions initially opposed charter schools. However, when charter schools became popular, the unions changed tactics. They now grudgingly give approval to charter schools, on certain conditions. They often push for district control over the schools, collective bargaining for charter-school teachers, or other restrictions.

Some teacher unions have renewed their open opposition to these schools with their usual lawsuits. The Ohio Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit that seeks to declare Ohios charter school laws unconstitutional. Ohios charter schools have been dragged into this lawsuit, thereby forcing them to waste valuable time, money, and resources on legal battles. Teacher unions use such lawsuits to try to stop or slow down the charter school movement. Also, Washington State, and some other states, still have no charter school laws partly because of strong opposition by teacher unions and other interest groups who oppose charter schools.

As a result of this harassment by state education bureaucrats, local school districts, and teacher unions, there are not nearly enough charter schools to fill the demand. There is a constant waiting list for these schools, especially in low-income minority neighborhoods. In the 2001-02 school year, the average charter school enrolled about 242 students. About 69 percent of these schools had waiting lists averaging 166 students per school, or over half the school enrollment.

The over 750,000 students currently enrolled in charter schools may seem like a lot, but that number represents little more than 1.7 percent of the approximately forty-five million children who attend public school each year. Yet charter schools have now been around for over ten years.

As with vouchers, how long will it take, if ever, for charter schools to come to your neighborhood? Fifty years? Parents should consider if they want to wait around this long while their children suffer through twelve years of public school.

In some societies, the standards for what constitute literacy are different from others. For example, some cultures believe that only people with skills such as computers skills and basic numeracy may be considered literate. This takes into account the fact that there are people who can add and subtract, but can't read letters as well as people who can learn to use a computer to a limited extent but may still not be able to read text. The Dreaded SAT Experimental Section

Officially the dreaded SAT experimental section is called the variable section. The first section is going to have essays that are 25 minutes long. The essay will then be followed by another six 25 minute sections. There are then two 20 minute sections and one 10 minute section.

One of those multiple choice 25 minute sections is going to be an experimental one. The people who administer the SAT need to test questions for future exams. This is to see if enough people get them right and/or wrong. So they use you as guinea pigs!

Since one of those sections is going to be experimental, it does not count toward your grade. Its very difficult to pick out the experimental section, but Ill give you a little bit of a tip:

If you get to a section that seems really weird or has questions that you havent seen before and its somehow different from the rest, its probably the experimental one. Dont panic. Stay positive. Just tell yourself its the experimental one and move on.

Now, if you get three 25 minute critical reading sections, one of them will have been the experimental one. If you get three 25 minute math sections, one of them will be the experimental one. And if you get two 25 minute writing sections, youll know one of those will be the experimental section.

So its kind of hard to tell which one it is until youre almost finished, but if you get to one thats weird and totally throws you off, dont think Oh my gosh, the whole things going down the tube now! I've been trying out an eye exercise for vision improvement in my ongoing quest to find effective ways to correct my near-sightedness. It's easy to do, and maybe, just maybe, I won't need to consider lasik eye surgery after all. You can practice this at home, at work or at school.

This vision improvement exercise is affectionately called "Three Cups". (Sounds like some magician's trick doesn't it?) There are three levels to it; I'll just give you the Level 1 exercise here. What it does is improve the focus and coordination of your eyes.

You'll need a diagram of the cups to do this. I'll give you the link to go to the site with the image in a minute.

Follow these steps

1. Find a pen or pencil.

2. Sit in your chair, relaxed of course, so you're 12 to 24 inches from your computer screen at eye level. Don't stare hard the image (of the cups), just be able to make them out.

3. Hold up the pen upright between the two circles (cups) about 1 inch from your screen. Make the tip of the pen the same level as the cups in the diagram.

4. Now, just relax your eyes on the top of the pen or pencil as you slowly move it towards your face. as you do this, you'll start seeing three circles instead of two. Here's the part to pay attention: when you see that the three circles are all the same size and shape, stop the pen.

5. Move your eyes' focus away from the top of the pen to the center circle. If you don't get it the first time, do it a few times. Some people may need a few days to practice. I had a little difficulty to make the center circle "stay" initially.

6. Once you can fix your focus on the center cup, move the pen away while trying to keep your focus. The center circle will become clearer and clearer as you become good at it.

7. Final step and the "magical" part: without your pen this time, look at the two circles and create the center circle as 3-dimensionally as possible.

How do you make this a habit? By making it happen unconsciously, like breathing. Starting today, take a small notebook that fits inside your pocket and write down as many activities that you perform throughout the day, as close to when you perform them as possible. These are NOT journals or diaries - they are simply jotting something down. They are not detailed time sheets. These are YOUR notes for YOU. For example: "8:30 opened mail; 8:50 call from Smith; 9:15 call to Lopez; 9:25 reviewed memo; etc." That's it. Simply record what you do.

At some point, you will look at this list. You'll see that you are spending too much time on the phone with Smith, or that you really WANTED to write a certain memo but didn't get around to it, so maybe tomorrow you need to do that first. This is the beginnings of making time management a habit. YOU will then begin to decide what system works for you, because YOUR habit will want to make this happen.

Time management is critical to success in almost anything you do, whether it is planning a covert military operation or your kid's birthday party. But time management is foreign to most people, and commercial systems often feel forced and artificial. By making time management a habit, an internal imperative, you will gain control over your time without having to take time out of your day to do it. Correct wine etiquette makes the tasting experience much more enjoyable. Like most interests, there is a set of protocol that most wine lovers adhere to. Good taste dictates that tasting at wineries, ordering wine at restaurants, and hosting a dinner party all require certain formalities.

Tasting Room Etiquette

In a winery's tasting room, white wines are generally tasted first, followed by reds, and then dessert wines. Within these categories, lighter-bodied wines preceed fuller-bodied ones. Water and crackers may be offered to cleanse the palate between each wine. Correct wine etiquette does not dictate that you must finish every glass. Winery tasting rooms provide jars to dispose of excess wine. Do not feel that you need to sample every wine offered- taste what appeals to you.

If you ask for a second tasting of a particular wine, it is in good taste to buy a bottle. Many wineries charge tasting fees which are generally applied to any purchase. It is not mandatory that you buy wine; purchase only what you desire. That being said, if you have made an appointment at a small winery, it is in good taste to make a purchase. Proper wine etiquette dictates that you not bring children to a tasting room.

General Restaurant Wine Etiquette

Wine service at a nice restaurant can be an unneccessarily difficult ordeal. The following tips will allow you to follow the customs of wine service with ease and confidence.

When choosing a wine from a restaurant's wine list, the main goal is to accomplish a suitable pairing with the entrees of your party. If the food orders are too different to generalize with one wine, consider purchasing splits or ordering by the glass. Waiters and sommeliers are there to answer your questions, but availing yourself to their services and advice will be much more beneficial if your questions are relatively specific.

For example, don't ask the sommelier, "What goes well with a rack of lamb?" Rather, ask, "I'd like to balance the spiciness of the lamb with a full-bodied, Syrah-based Rhone. Do you have any favorites?" Your effort will be appreciated and service and interaction will be more seamless. I guarentee you will be more pleased with the outcome.

After ordering, the waiter/sommelier will retrieve your selection, and then present it, label forward, to the host of the party. This is merely to verify it is the correct wine. The cork is removed and placed on the table. Unless it is clearly tainted, (the waiter/sommelier should notice if it is) do not touch or smell it, as it means nothing.

A small amount will then be poured for the host. Swirl the wine in the glass, smell, then taste. This is to make sure the wine is not spoiled and is not an opportunity to send back a sound wine that you are not crazy about. After approval, the wine will be poured clockwise to the right, ladies first. The host's glass will be topped last.

Corkage Etiquette

It is increasingly customary in many parts of the country for restaurants to extend corkage policies for patrons whom wish to bring their own wine. However, this is not the case everywhere, (especially on the East Coast), and proper wine etiquette dictates that several things should be kept in mind.

Always call the restaurant in advance to verify that corkage is allowed. Also ask what the fee is to avoid any surprises. In my experience, very few restaurants charge over $20 as a corkage fee. Some restaurants will waive this fee if an additional bottle is purchased from the wine list, but do not assume that this is always the case.

Wine brought to a restaurant should be relatively unique or rare, and definitely should not appear on the restaurant's wine list. After the waiter/sommelier opens and pours the contents, proper wine etiquette dictates that you offer them a taste. Following these guidelines will ensure that both you and the restaurant staff are happy.

The Duty of the Host at Dinner Parties

The duty of the host toward his/her guests is one of the most ancient and enduring forms of etiquette in human civilization. When serving wine, making sure that your guests are comfortable with the process should be your paramount concern.

Before serving, always allow wine time to breathe at room temperature. Never pour wine for guests immediately after opening. It is the host's responsibility to discreetly ensure that the wine is sound and unspoiled. This should be done away from company, and a small amount should be sampled.

Always serve wine to your guests in clean, spotless glasses. This may seem obvious, but it is a very mistake. Additionally, if more than one wine is served, make sure that they are poured in a logical progression.

Especially with older wines, be aware that there may be a significant amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Keep this in mind when deciding the portion given to each guest. Avoid the embarrassing instance of the last person receiving an unacceptable amount of solids in their glass. If this is a concern with a particular bottle, refrain from pouring the last half glass.

It may be necessary or beneficial to decant a wine to either remove sediment or to expose it to oxygen. Be cautious with this practice, as older wines may quickly fade if left in a decanter for too long.

Wine enjoyment should be an enjoyable and unintimidating process. With these tips in mind, you are prepared for the majority of social situations that involve wine.

Sun Protection to Prevent Premature Aging and Skin Cancer

Some of us might love a healthy tan but others (like myself) prefer to shy away from the sun. Either way, sun protection is still a must. Harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin.

To be sufficiently protected, you will need a sunscreen that can protect you from UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the ones that cause sagging and wrinkles, and the level of protection from these rays is shown by a PA rating system, with PA+++ being the highest index.

UVB rays are the ones that cause burning and spots. The SPF (Sun Proctection Factor) of a sunscreen shows how long you will be protected from UVB rays. For example, if you usually take 10 mins in the sun to get burned, a sunscreen of SPF 15 will protect you for 15 times longer (150 mins). I recommend at least SPF 30 and PA+++ for daily use and SPF 50 if you are planning to stay in the sun for hours.

Everyone needs sunscreen, not only the fair-skinned. Though darker skin provides some natural form of sun protection, it doesn't prevent skin cancer and sunburn. Also, remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or so, or more often if you sweat alot or go swimming. This is because some of your sunscreen will come off (even if it's waterproof), and thus offer less protection.

Lastly, don't miss out places such as your ears, feet, nose, eyelids when applying sunscreen. I once forgot to apply sunscreen on my ears before going out for hours in the sun and I ended up with pinkish sun-burnt ears for a week! Ouch.

Natural Remedies for for the Treatment of Hair Loss

Since the introduction of Rogaine in the early 1980's, androgenic mediated hair loss, or 'male pattern baldness' has been considered a treatable condition through the use of pharmaceutical preparations. The perception that over-the-counter and prescription drugs are the only means to successfully treat this type of hair loss is perpetuated by the lack of well-funded and publicized studies on the efficacy of natural treatments. However, as the understanding of the biological mechanism of male pattern baldness has become clear through a great body of research, the reality of an effective natural treatment regimen is at hand. After a review of the available natural products, some suggestions will be made for creating your own regimen for treating hair loss naturally.

The overall cause of male pattern baldness is now well-known: this type of hair loss seen in about a third of the male population is mediated by the androgenic metabolite of testosterone known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT. The production of this now-infamous hormone increases later in life for many men, along with changes with the receptors for this hormone at the hair follicles.

In general, the pertinent hair follicles shrink with continued exposure to the androgenic hormone, some forming only small, villus hairs, while others eventually die completely. Some sources claim these follicles are still getting an adequate blood supply, while others note a waxy buildup or scar-like tissue surrounding the follicles, preventing adequate nutrient delivery. Thus, the localized cause of hair loss, at the follicle level, is still being researched. This does not mean there has been success in discovery of natural hair loss remedies!

The regrowth of hair due to androgenic-induced loss should be addressed on two fronts. First, the levels of DHT produced within the body (rather than topically) should be addressed, along with the binding of DHT at it's receptor sites. Second, hair growth should be stimulated topically with application of nutrients and/or DHT suppressors on the follicles themselves. Let's first address the suppression of DHT production and binding systemically (within the body).

Prescription drugs such as Finasteride and Dutasteride are available which lower blood levels of DHT, and have been used to improve hair loss conditions. There are now several well-known natural, plant-based products which either reduce testosterone's conversion to DHT (via the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme system), block the binding of DHT to receptor sites, or both. Most common, and most important are Saw Palmetto Berry extract and Stinging Nettle Root extract. These to herbs work in combination to both block the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prevent it's binding to receptor sites in the scalp. Other herbs employed with similar functions include pygeum africanum and pumpkin seed oil, both used to bring into balance the testosterone/DHT ratio; lastly, the plant sterol Beta-Sitosterol is often used successfully to treat prostate enlargement, which has similar causes to male pattern baldness - whether it will support hair growth is not yet known, but it likely won't hurt!. Finally, getting an adequate supply of Zinc is also important in maintaining this hormonal balance. The entire androgen hormone regulation system is fairly complex; just remember these items: Saw Palmetto, Nettle Root (not leaf!), Pygeum, Zinc, and Beta-Sitosterol. By the way, if using a prostate formula for these nutrients, they should be taken in gel cap form - they are better absorbed this way than in plain powder, and hence more effective.

In addition to these herbs, which are also commonly used around the world for blocking the creation and effects of DHT, Procyanidins, or Polyphenols, have been shown to inhibit DHT systemically, AND can stimulate hair growth when applied topically. These anti-oxidant compounds first became renown with the discovery of the amazing action of grape seed extract and it's powerful ability as a free-radical scavenger. More recently, Japanese researchers went through the effort of testing HUNDREDS of compounds in the laboratory for their effect on the stimulation of hair growth, and they found the compounds of grape seed extract grew hair at a greater rate than the pharmaceutical preparation Minixodil. With further testing, using variations of the polyphenols, they discovered those found in apple skin polyphenols to be even more effective, nearly twice effective as Rogaine. Further, with the addition of Forskolin, another herbal extract, the effect was even greater. Exciting news! The interesting thing is that these compounds actually stimulated the hair follicles to become active, whereas it seems Rogaine works by lowering blood pressure in the scalp, thereby increasing blood flow to the follicles. And these compounds did not produce an initial 'shedding' as Rogaine has been known to do.

Ok, before we get to the good stuff - like how to create your own hair regrowth program, let's look at one more class of natural products - essential oils. Essential oils are powerful, aromatic compounds distilled from plants, with highly regarded medicinal properties, well beyond the effects of only their aromas. Rosemary essential oil has long been considered a 'hair tonic', more than likely because of it's ability to stimulate blood flow locally. A certain type of rosemary, known as rosemary verbenone, also contains compounds which influence skin regeneration. Recall the addition of Retin-A to the use of Rogaine? This was to stimulate the turnover of the skin, increasing the pace of the hair regrowth process. Other essential oils, such as Lavender, have an anti-inflammatory (inflammation is sometimes implicated in hair loss) and skin regenerating effects. Thyme and Cedarwood oils have also been studied, and the combination of these oils has been shown effective at hair growth stimulation in patients with alopecia areata.

Given all this wonderful information, how does one combine them into an effective regimen? The best thing to do is keep it simple - the more simple it is, the more likely it is you'll stay with it for the several months it will take to see significant effects. So, for the systemic DHT suppression and inhibition, look at formulas either designed specifically for hair, or those for the support of the Prostate gland - they will contain almost the exact same ingredients. Look for a high-quality supplement, with standardized Saw Palmetto extract, Nettle Root extract, and Pygeum extract. Do not take the un-extracted herbs, they will not likely be strong enough in doses you are willing to consume. Saw Palmetto can be consumed in doses between 160 and 320mg daily, Nettle Root a bit more, and Pygeum significantly less. They should be in a gel cap, preferably in Pumpkin seed oil. Take a separate Beta Sitosterol supplement, around 400mg daily, if it is not included already. This is typically found in dry capsules, and there have not been reports of the importance of consuming this in an oil-based capsule, though you can take it with fatty food if you want to be sure (this may help the absorption). Add an oral supplement of Green Tea extract, Grape Seed extract, or Apple Polyphenol extract if you like, along with a good multivitamin.

Now for the topical applications - the polyphenols can be mixed in water. Even better would be to find Nettle Root, grind it up and make a strong tea. To this, create a 1-3% solution by weight of the polyphenols in the liquid and apply twice daily (shake really well or use a blender). Grape seed extract is acceptable, though apple polyphenols would be best. They are hard to come by just yet, but are becoming more popular and available. A bulk supply is best, so you don't have to go opening capsules! A .5-1% addition of Forskolin herb extract can be made io increase effectiveness, but is not completely necessary. Applying right after a shower may make it easier to distribute the liquid on the scalp, and may also increase absorption. It is important to note that increasing the concentration beyond 1% for Grapeseed extract and 3% for Apple polyphenols extract is not advised - higher concentrations did not show increased efficacy - in fact, there may be an opposite effect. For the record, there are about 30 grams of water in one ounce; 1 gram of powder in this is just over a 3% solution. Finally, to this solution, a small amount of the Saw Palmetto blend from a ge lcap can be added - though the efficacy of this has not been noted in the literature.

For the essential oils, use 1ml of each oil per one once of carrier oil (a blend of jojoba and grapeseed was used in the study showing hair regrowth in Scottland). Because this is isn't as attractive once applied, though you will smell nice, apply in the evening, before bed, between once a day and once every three days. Or apply during the day some time, massaging into the scalp, and leaving in for 20 minutes to an hour, then wash out. This will give enough time for the oils to penetrate the skin and have their effect.

So there it is, the roundup of the more well-known and tested natural remedies for male pattern baldness. While Rogaine for growth stimulation, and Finasteride or Dutasteride for DHT inhibition are completely reasonable ways to go, their costs are high and the effects of their long term use are not well known. And then there are some folks that would prefer to stay away from chemically manufactured medicines altogether - hopefully this bit of information will help. There is much more research available on the internet, though hopefully this is enough information to get you confidently started.

Caring For Your Tender Parts

Often, abused, neglected and taken for granted is the poor old faithful tender. It is easily the least maintained of all craft on the waters of the world today and probably always was! However, the poor thing is expected to give sterling service, twenty-four hours a day in all weathers.

It is fair to say that many tenders should be dragged off the beach and attacked with a good strong chain saw and the resulting flotsam used to stoke up the barbyhowever, for the others that remain afloat, there are a few things that may take them into the next millenium, with a stroke of luck!

CATEGORIES
Well, basically all that we have to deal with are four kinds. Wooden, aluminium, rubber and fibreglass. Let's kick off with the first category.

TIMBER
Very many existing tenders are constructed from ply and these are often in exceedingly poor repair. They are given the most cursory nod as a rule and only looked at when a foot goes through the bottom. The greatest protection of all is generally three things, paint, paint and more paint. If the wood is protected from the weather, greater is the chance of survival. Before painting your tender, DRY it out thoroughly, it'll have a lot more chance of letting the paint actually stick to itIf it doesn't have a drain plug, then fit oneIt'll give it twice the life if water is not allowed to accumulate. Oh yes, secure the bungs with lanyards. Holes may be rudely repaired with a good old square patch using epoxy and bronze screws.

Flotation is always highly recommended in ply dinghies and may be in the form of sealed polystyrene glued under seats. Also, inflatable beach balls stuffed in lockers and then inflated are cheap and safe. Always tie your rowlocks on with nylon rope and repair all damage the instant it is done.

Finally, wash it out thoroughly and store upside down when not in use and replace all painters and leads regularly. I'm not supposed to say this either but in the case of a very leaky tender, a quick efficient repair may be undertaken by turning over the boat, thoroughly drying out, then painting rubberised bitumen paint over the bottom several times. It won't last forever but it will work for a while.

INFLATABLES
An old favourite is the inflatable. Giving many years of reliable service they have huge buoyancy, require little maintenance and are extremely light. So much so they are the favourite prey of those vile beings that lurk around boatyards and relieve you of your much loved rubber duckyboiling in hot tar is too good for them, but I digressas mentioned, little maintenance is needed. However, some care must be taken if your inflatable is not to end up looking like a pile of tired old elephant's intestines!

Often forgotten is the bottom of the inflatable. Take care where you land and don't drag it over rough beaches. Always try to carry it if you can. Check regularly for scuffs and if you have any deep scores put a patch over it before it is punctured.

Wooden floor boards are often neglected and left unvarnished and with water accumulating underneath. If this is rainwater the boards will rot quicker than if it is salt. Take them out and varnish 'em on a regular basis. If they are split, smooth them off to prevent chafing and sudden punctures an inflatable with no air in is as much use as a hat rack is to a moose

Put the anchor and chain into a plastic bucket to prevent rust stains and damage. Check all ropes, lanyards and painters regularly.

A common problem with inflatables is too much pressure. An inflatable pumped up in the cool of the morning will expand with the heat of the sun and severely strain or split the joins. Ensure that this does not happen with regular checking.

Clean by hosing all sand, grit and broken shells out on a regular basis and keep it clean at all times. A dropped fish hook in an inflatable has much the same effect as Saddam Hussein on World Peace

Lastly, ensure that if you do get punctured ensure that you always have the manufacturer's recommended repair kit and take great pains to read the instructions thoroughly. Wherever possible, keep your inflatable stored out of the sun and invest in a large padlock and chain.

FIBREGLASS
Normally glass tenders are in a bad state of repair and owner's often see little point in repairing dings and scuffs. If you are one of those people that like to see things looking good, a ding can be repaired using a gel-coat repair kit. Car repair putty is porous and will eventually bulge and drop off like a leech and epoxy is the best of all for repairing fibreglass.

Where timber rubbing strakes are missing or rotted, you'll lose strength in the boat's rigidity and it'll pay to replace them. If they are not replaced the hull will flex, craze and crack. All timber should be kept in good repair by coating with varnish. If you have varnishing, use epoxy. It will eventually dull but you can always paint it over later on.

Cruelly referred to as 'washing-up bowls' glass dinghies however, have a well earned reputation for longevity and reliability and remain a firm favourite.

ALUMINIUM Isn't it incredible just how much damage the good old tinny will sustain. They seem to last forever and it's no surprise that the tinny is such a firm favourite. No maintenance seems to be the order of the day but the long suffering tinny can be made to suffer even longer if a few basic rules are adhered to.

Never leave seawater and steel objects lying in the bottom of the boat. Always drain the tinny and flush with fresh water after use. Never repair the tinny with steel or monel rivets. Localised corrosion will weaken the repair with dire results. As with steel objects, never leave wet rags in the boat at all.

Don't leave tinnys in the water for extended periods, especially near mooring jetties with shore power supplied. Stray electrical currents can eat the bottom faster than you'd believe!

If repairing your much battered aluminium boat, don't just use any old ally sheet that you find down the tip. They must be repaired with correct alloys that are especially formulated for use with sea water. Alloys containing copper are a disaster as is Duralumin. Both will corrode extremely quickly as will incorrect fastenings that might be used for the repair. Seek advice from you local tinny manufacturer and don't use car repair rivets, no way! Another useful repair material for aluminium is epoxy glue. If the surface is properly repaired it can be used together with bi-axial glass cloths and the repair can be extremely strong. Polyester resins and chopped strand mat will eventually delaminate be warned.

FENDERS
All of the above tenders can be preserved for many years longer by the intelligent use of fenders and rubber rubbing strakes. A thick length of rope around a wooden dinghy will make an effective rubbing strake.

It's a sad fact that many folks leave their tenders in a terrible woebegone state and when asked why the answer is usually, "Well, who'd nick that bloody thing?"

One must agree in a way but you also have to remember the fact that you and your families lives are fully dependent on that scruffy little cockshellit may look vile but there's no excuse on planet earth for it to be unseaworthy and dangerous.
