It is more and more clear how horrendous the George W. Bush presidency has been. The Bush administrations fiscal policies, combined with trumped-up and unjustified War spending are stealing from our children and our grandchildren as the nations debt threatens to destroy all of the worlds monetary structures.

Even more fearful than their monetary fiascoes is the assault by the Bush gang on American Civil Liberties. The obviously unconstitutional Patriot Act goes unchallenged by a supine and shamefully weak Congress and Judicial system. None who watched the Supreme Court conspire with Bush and Chaney in their coup d'tat, stealing the last Presidential election, can expect much justice from the highest court and last hope for preservation of American ideals.

In spite of my gloomy appraisal, I take some hope in the curious fact that we recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walden by Henry David Thoreau. That fact was the cause of some celebration by a large group of so-called Thoreauvian scholars who study the mans huge body of writings. His personal journal runs to 22,000 pages.

To me however, it is not Walden which is a cause for hope, but Thoreaus earlier essay, Civil Disobedience, a 22 page essay advocating refusal to obey an unjust ruling power, in Thoreaus case, The American Government of his time.

A defining quote from the work goes, All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency are great and unendurable.

Thoreau wrote the essay after he had spent a single night in jail in 1846 for refusing to pay his poll tax, in spite of the fact that his friends offered to pay it for him. He simply refused to pay a tax to support a government which he considered unjust, in his case because it allowed the outright ownership of human beings by other human beings: Slavery. He was a loudly outspoken Abolitionist.

Whether Thoreaus writings and frequent public speeches contributed to the American Civil War, the essay Civil Disobedience surely has had a profound influence on the course of human history. His effect has reached the affairs of multitudes that could not have read the work itself, because great men, leaders in actions to change the world, read the essay. Three of these cited Civil Disobedience as a milestone work in the development of their thinking, Count Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

I find it awesome to think that a single brief statement of moral commitment by Henry David Thoreau, a local Massachusetts land-surveyor of very tenuous health, could so shake the world as it obviously has. But, it aint been easy. Many will remember Gandhis starving himself in hunger strikes to oppose British rule of India, and Kings impassioned, I have a dream speech for civil rights in the American South of the nineteen sixties, not long before his assassination. Leo Tolstoys writings on the lives of Russian serfs contributed to the thoughts of later Russian leaders who led that nation away from the despotism of the Tsars.

But, now is now in America. We are faced with a deeply divided nation again. The division this time is clearly based upon power and money. The Bush gang is firmly entrenching a financial aristocracy, which they appear prepared to preserve at any cost in the lives of our military and in our civil liberties. If he does nothing more, Osama Bin Lauden will have changed America and the world forever.

Fear has become a political weapon used for the basest reasons. A new title has emerged for suppressing dissent: The War on Terror. The dimensions of such a war elude me. I do not have much understanding of what Bush and Chaney intend when they spout their venom. If I am correct, Terror exists in the minds and spirit of human beings, in this case Americans. We are terrified, and I agree that Bush and Bin Lauden and Chaney and Rumsfeld and Ashcroft have acted in concert to make us terrified of mass destruction. (Although, the most recent great acts of mass destruction, we did the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.)

Thoreau may be looking over our shoulders now, suggesting that we consider the honesty of what we are taking part in, the theft from our children and their children, the acceptance of the destruction of American ideals. I think he would have asked us to not be subjugated by Fear. -30-

This is the first step to planning the wedding of your dreams. Purchase a professionally made wedding planner. This organizer will be your planning companion. It must contain relevant, useful information and tools. Such as; budget planner, guest list planner, calendar, wedding countdown checklist, vendor interview questions, wedding day itinerary, etc.

The binder you choose should be lightweight and durable so that you can carry it with you while meeting with your vendors or shopping for your gown. Use this planner to document all aspects of your planning. From vendor appointments to transportation. Keep copies of your vendor contracts in your planner and have it with you on your wedding day in case of any vendor misunderstandings.

The second step is also quite easy. Sit down with your fianc and talk about your 'dream wedding'. Is it in your church? Is it a small gathering of important friends and family? Big band and lot's of dancing? A five tiered cake with fondant and sugar flowers? Is it Elegant? Or Casual? Is it on the beach in Hawaii? Whatever your vision, write it down. You will want to convey this to your wedding vendors during the interview process.

Number four. Complete your guest list. You may want to create an A list and a B list depending on your budget.

Step five. Interview and hire wedding vendors. By this point you will have received many recommendations from recently married friends. I suggest you interview these vendors first. Interview a minimum of three vendors per category. You want to find the perfect fit for your event. Discuss your budget and communicate your wedding vision. Do not hire a vendor on price alone. Hire a vendor whom you feel has your best interests at heart. Do not discount your vendors referral list. Call at least three.

Number six. At this point, you may want to consider hiring a professional wedding consultant. A wedding consultant will be able to determine which vendors will be best for your event and for your budget. Your consultant will save you time and money by doing all the legwork for you, bringing your wedding vision to life, and keeping you on budget.

Seven. Plan your honeymoon. Keep in mind the season and your vacation interests. Use a certified travel agent. Feel free to browse the web for honeymoon ideas and locals, but it is best to leave the details to a professional agent. Would you trust a plumber to do your heart surgery?

And finally, step number eight . Relax. Know that your dream wedding is being handled by industry professionals who have done this many, many times.

Have you made your usual New Year resolutions? You know the resolutions where you turn over a newleaf to get fit, steer away from junk food and start a savings plan. While you are reflecting on past bad habits and setting new directions for your personal life consider taking stock of your parenting as well.

A word of warning -- you will probably feel a little inadequate as you look back on some of your past practices. If you are like most parents you nag your kids too much, over-react when they mess up and you probably regret not spending enough time with them. Dont be too hard on yourself. Not only is parenting the worlds hardest job but children arent born with owners manuals so we tend to rely on trial and error a great deal.

As you ponder the next twelve months of parenthood here are 15 New Years resolutions to consider. Avoid trying to adopt every idea. Be realistic and choose one or two to add to your list of New Years resolutions.

1. Be consistent with your discipline. This is a big ask as dealing with kids misbehaviour tests the patience and resolve of the even the most assured parents. Set consistent limits and boundaries, even for adolescents, and be willing to negotiate and give a little ground. When children refuse to cooperate or break the rules, act calmly and reasonably rather than resort to severe measures to teach them a lesson.

2. Focus on childrens positive behaviours. If you find yourself continually pointing out your childrens misbehaviour and getting nowhere then try to ignore the inappropriate as much as possible. Get into the habit of catching kids being good. Like adults, children respond to favourable comments and are likely to adopt behaviours that gain them attention.

3. Encourage children persistently. It has been estimated that children hear 17 negative comments at home for every piece of praise or encouragement. Exposure to continuous criticism and negative comments can have disastrous effects on childrens self esteem. If you are not an encouraging person then linking your positive comments to something you normally do such as saying good night to your children. Then you will know that you have encouraged them at least once each day. Thats a good start.

4. Give yourself a regular break. Dont be a slave to your family. Taking time out to do something just for yourself is a necessity rather than a luxury. Revise your household routine, solicit the help of your partner or relatives, or employ a baby-sitter to provide you with some time-off.

5. Make guilt work for you. Lets face it, parents can find plenty of issues to feel guilty about. Leaving children in child-care, long hours spent at work, and even discipline measures are common sources of guilt. Avoid easing your guilt by being too lenient, spoiling or indulging children with toys or other material possessions. Guilt can be beneficial though; if it reminds you to take time off work to attend a childs school play children or prompts you to hire some domestic help to create more family time.

6. Make a plan to survive those difficult times. Only television families are free of manic times of the day. Mealtime mayhem, morning madness and bedtime battles are common in many families. Identify your difficult time of the day and get super organised and be willing to make yourself scarce if children make unnecessary demands on you at these times.

7. Stay out of childrens fights. Brawling siblings disturb the peace so it is difficult for parents not to become involved. Chances are you either plead for peace and quiet, make a ruling to end the dispute, or take sides to lay blame on the child who caused the infraction. If you are tired of interfering in childrens battles then leave it up to them to resolve. When your children begin to bicker beat it to another part of the house or boot them outside until they have finished.

8. Check your childrens computer usage. Computers are rapidly replacing the television as the electronic baby-sitter in many families. To be fair, computers have more educational potential than the television but children predominantly use them for games, unless they receive assistance and direction from parents. Pull up a chair and join in rather than leave children to their own devices whenever they hit a computer.

9. Avoid the good parent syndrome. Good parents protect children from many of lifes difficulties and rob them of opportunities to develop independence and responsibility. They take forgotten lunches to school, pay fines for their childrens overdue library books and believe that chores are for parents rather than children. If this sounds familiar let children take more responsibility for their own actions in the coming year.

10. Keep misbehaviour in perspective. You probably think at times that your children or teenagers are the worlds worst or that no one else acts up like them. Think again. If your child misbehaves the chances are that he or she is no trailblazer. Many others mess up too. That is little comfort, however, if you have to put up with difficult kids day in and day out. Regardless of how hard things become try to focus on their positive behaviours and work hard to maintain your relationship even if it appears that the effort is all one way. Your persistence will pay off in the long run.

Insurance is a separate bet and has nothing to do with your hand. Your betting the house has blackjack. Your allowed to bet up to half your bet, if the dealer has blackjack you will not lose anything, if the dealer does not have blackjack youll lose your insurance bet and continue playing the hand as normal. Insurance is not a good bet and I dont recommend taking insurance.

By playing basic strategy in the long run you should come out ahead over a period of time. The biggest advantage the casinos have... is they have a bigger bankroll.

This does not mean to run out and risk all your money. Play wise, if the cards are not running you way, leave. Ive seen a lot of players think they know what they are doing and these are the ones Ive seen lose the most. And the ones I like to deal to the best. Especially the ones that are card counting.

Card counting is what tells you when to deviate from basic strategy, when to very your bet and what curves the houses edge.

The higher the plus...the more tens are left in the deck...witch tell you...example: you have 15...up card is 10...the count is +6...the count tells you to stay because there are more 10s left in the deck than the smaller card. Chances are, your hit card would of been a 10.

Watch the way you bet...by betting 1 unit and jumping to 15 units on a high plus is a dead give away, your card counting and will catch every ones attention. Very your bet up to 4 units, you wont have all the attention on you.

Card counting could go ether way, for the player or the house.

Trust me, casinos know if your moving with the count. The eye in the sky is watching your every move. If you win a lot of money, they will ban you from playing 21, or they will flat bet you. Flat bet means what ever your first bet is at the start of the deck will stay the same though out the deck.

They know if you are card counting...but your not winning a lot of money...they will leave you alone..

The reason casinos dislike card counters....is....the game is no longer a game of chance, it becomes a game of skill.

Play in the bigger casino on the strip, they do not care as much if you card count or win. In the long run theyll get their money back. Remember they do not build casinos from winners. Keep Kenny Rodgers song in your mind, The Gambler. Know when to walk away!
