Vacuum Cleaner Tune Up

So you vacuum your carpet at least once a week, good. But is your vacuum cleaner up to the task or are you just wasting your time. A vacuum in poor condition will just not get the job done. Read this article and learn how to tune up your vacuum cleaner to get the most out of your vacuuming.

The first thing you need to look at is the bag. If your bag or dust cup is too full it drastically cuts down on the vacuum power. Clean your dust cup out each time you use your vacuum and change your vacuum bag whenever it becomes half full. This is one of the biggest things you can do to make our vacuum run well.

Next check your hoses and make sure they are clean of all obstructions. It is very easy for hoses to become clogged over time. If possible remove them from the vacuum and make sure they are clear by inserting an appropriate sized stick into them.

After you have cleaned the hoses it is time to move on to the agitator bar at the bottom of the vacuum. If possible remove it and clean it thoroughly. Check the belt and make sure it has the right tension and that it is not damaged. If it is at all damaged replace it, belts are very cheap to replace.

That is all there is to having a well maintained vacuum. Try to perform this tune up every month or so to keep it running optimally and to make the most of your time vacuuming.

The Growth of Sail

The idea of sailing for recreation would have seemed ridiculous to the seafarers who explored the seas that cover two-thirds of the earth's surface, and who helped to develop nations through world trade and conquest.

Empire Exploration. Trade, exploration, and conquest were the driving forces that made the great seafaring nations prosperous and powerful. It helped to develop empires, for example the British Empire, and you may have heard the well known song including the words,

Britain rules the waves. Key to these empire expansions was the domination of the sea and the ability of their naval designers, builders, and sailors to produce and handle the huge variety of sailing ships on which there power depended.

Sailing and Trade. For thousands of years, the world depended exclusively on sail power, both for short and long distances across all types of waterways. Whether on great rivers, or seas or oceans, sail power was the only alternative to muscle power applied to paddles and oars. The Polynesian.In the Pacific Ocean, the Polynesian islanders developed the proa, a unique multihulled craft, using hollowed-out tree trunks for the main canoe, with a stabilizing outrigger to help keep it upright. Although it was mainly paddles driven, it had a lateen-type sail for motive power. These fragile craft made many long ocean passages, with the navigator using only the stars in the sky, the wind, and the sea as his guides to making a distant landfall. The Chinese.The Chinese solution to sail power was the Chinese lugsail, commonly referred to as a junks. A junk rig had a short mast and woven sails, supported by long bamboo battens. These were an efficient solution, simple and easy to handle, easy to repair, thereby requiring a small crew to sail them. Arabians.The square-sail rig became common in most European countries, although it was really only suitable for sailing on downwind courses. Arabian dhows developed their characteristic huge lateen (triangular) sails as a capable sailing solution. A dhow could sail upwind well and was fast compared to square-rigged ships. Its disadvantage being the large crew that was needed to handle it, but that was not a problem in an area where inexpensive and amenable labour was plentiful.

Vikings. In every part of the world, ever culture developed there own solutions to harnessing the wind, and building boats proficient enough to carry people and cargo long distances. These local solutions therefore created unique craft, some of which still survive. For example, Viking longboats travelled thousands of miles under oars and their simple square sails.

Materials. Wood was the natural choice of building material for these ships, which come in all shapes and sizes, but, if wood was lacking, human ingenuity still allowed boats to be built from woven reeds. It was not until the advancement of iron and steel, which allowed builders to produce cheaper and stronger hulls, that wood began to be replaced with iron and steel as the main boat-building material. Designs for warships, merchant ships, and fishing vessels all evolved with the advancement in materials, to suit their function. This resulted in many types of boats; each with special strengths and advantages. The famous Thames Barges, for instance, evolved as the best design solution for carrying cargo in the shallow waters of the Thames Estuary and on the East Coast. These barges were sailed by a crew of two, usually a man and a boy. Hundreds, if not thousands, of boat designs evolved, each with its own specific characteristics to suit local needs.

Clipper Ships. Perhaps the design pinnacle of cargo carrying sailing ships was the magnificent clipper ships of the 19th century, so-called because they clipped short the time required for a given passage. Designed and built for speed, they raced across oceans to be first to market and capture the best prices for their precious cargoes of wool and tea. The Cutty Sark is perhaps the most famous clipper ship of all. The clippers raced across oceans to be the first to bring goods to Western markets, capturing the best prices. But the days of sail where numbered for the both cargo and warships. Steam, then motor outclassed sail for speed and reliability, although they came at a cost. Today, newer materials are also available, such as GRP and carbon fibre, which evolve further the advancement of sailing, and it subsequent maintenance. Sailing today now offers relaxation, competition, or adrenaline-surging excitement. This is depending on how you choose to enjoy it, and the type of boat you chose to sail in.

The Truth About No Money Down Or Closing Cost Mortgage Companies

Ever seen an ad which says that you can get a mortgage without any closing cost? These no-money-down or closing-cost mortgage companies are actually relying on unethical sales tactics. They are hiding the facts about the loan and highlighting only one aspect that can sound really good but isnt that easy.

No-Money-Down Mortgage Companies

There are many no-money-down or closing-cost mortgage companies that offer you loans without having to pay any down payment. But then some of them require Private Mortgage Insurance, or PMI. The best thing that you can do with such companies is avoid them. A PMI is an insurance policy for which you pay the premium and it protects the lender. It is a fantastic tool to extract some more money from you in your monthly payments. The only thing that the PMI does for you is add several hundred dollars to your monthly payment.

No-Closing-Cost Mortgage Companies

If you thought the first one was sleazy, wait till you hear about this one. The no-money-down or closing-cost mortgage companies that advertise about zero closing costs actually hike up their interest rates by as much as 1%. This might seem like a small amount at first but in the end, it will cost you much more when you compare it to the closing cost that you would have paid. The lenders or the no-money-down or closing-cost mortgage companies doesnt specify this fact in the advertisements. So the best advice is to do your homework and look for legitimate companies without any hidden facts or costs.

Best Cities for Technology Jobs - 7 High-Tech Cities

If you want to relocate to a tech-savvy citya city that offers great prospects for technology talentthen you'll love the seven cities listed below. Each of the 7 cities below have above-average brainpower (smart populations), great technology infrastructure, and a growing technology job sector.

1. Seattle, WA - Forty seven percent of Seattle's population holds a bachelor's degree or higher, making Seattle the "brain-iest" city in the U.S. Seattle is well-known for its technology infrastructure (wireless city), and growing tech industry. Microsoft and Nintendo are both located in Redmond, just outside of Seattle. Notable technology companies located within (or nearby) Seattle include Real Networks, Tmobile, Amazon, Clearwire, Infopop, Zillow.com, and Expedia.com. Just like San Jose and San Francisco, Seattle seems to attract many internet startups.

2. Austin, TX - Like Seattle, more than 40% of Austin's population holds a bachelor's degree. This is one of the highest percentages in the nation. Austin is the state capital and attracts talent from The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A& M University (Texas A&M is located in neighboring College Station). The weather is warm and sunny in Austin, and Texas has no state income tax. Notable technology/engineering companies headquartered in Austin include Dell Computers, National Instruments, and Austin Semiconductors.

3. San Francisco Bay Area, CA - San Francisco has always attracted people with intellectual and technology talent. Forty-five percent of San Francisco's residents hold bachelor's degrees, second only to Seattle, and The City by the Bay ranks third for its concentration of graduate and professional degrees. The infamous dot-com era began in San Francisco, and to this day, many internet and software companies are headquartered in the Bay Area. Notable companies include: BitTorrent, Craigslist, Blogspot, Digg, Google, Linden Lab (Second Life), Salesforce.com, Typepad, Technorati, Cnet, SBC Communications, and Sega.

4. Raleigh-Durham, NC - Raleigh-Durham, also known as "The Triangle," attracts some the brightest minds due to its proximity to 3 major universities (Duke University, NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill), and Research Triangle Parka well-known biotech, business and research center. 44% of Raleigh residents age 25 and older hold bachelor's degrees. Notable companies in the Triangle area include: Cisco, IBM, Lenovo, SAS, Progress Energy, NetApp, and RBC Centura.

5. Atlanta, GA - Atlanta is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities in the Southeast and is a virtual hotbed for technology workers. Forty-two percent of Atlanta residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and Atlanta is home to Georgia Tech and Georgia State. Notable companies headquartered in Atlanta include: AT&T, CNN, Cox Communications, Lucent Technologies, Data General, Hewlett-Packard, Earthlink, Home Depot, Delta Airlines, Lockheed Martin (in Marietta), Siemens, SunTrust Bank, Equifax, and Web.com.

6. Colorado Springs, CO - Colorado can be described as a small-scale Seattlea rapidly growing technology center that is attracting highly educated workers. Colorado Springs is known for its aerospace research and military installations including the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), Fort Peterson Air Force Base, and The U.S. Air Force Academy. This mountain city has the lowest percentage of high school dropouts. (It is one of just two places with a dropout rate below 10 percent.) Notable companies in Colorado Springs include: Hewlett-Packard and 17 other major electronics companies which combined employ over 10,000 people. Other companies with a presence in the city include Oracle, T. Rowe Price, Progressive Insurance, and Amtel.

7. Washington, D.C. - It's no surprise that Washington D.C. has a strong technology industry since the city is home to the federal government, world-renown research institutes, lobbying firms, and one of the highest concentrations of law offices. More than one-fifth of D.C. residents have graduate or professional degrees, and notable companies in D.C. include: XM Satellite Radio, Carlyle Group, CSPAN, Lincoln Group, Allbritton Communications Company, and Blue State Digital.

Are these the only options for top technology cities? Of course not - here are some other top technology cities and top "smart" cities Explore your options, and see which city is the right fit for you.

Finding Asbestos Lawyers - 3 Resources

Asbestos is a material made of fibers that can cause significant damage when inhaled in through the lungs. It wasnt until later that it becomes apparent that the adverse effects of asbestos were causing serious illnesses, such as mesothelioma cancer.

As a result, there have been many asbestos lawsuits where the victim is filing suit against those responsible for placing the victim in the toxic asbestos environment. If you feel that you have suffered from exposure to asbestos, then the best option is to file a lawsuit. In order to do so, you must find a lawyer and that is where the following list comes in.

Below you will find a few listing of where to find a lawyer who specializes in asbestos related claims and lawsuits.

1. Refer to the Yellow Pages:
Take the time to open up the yellow pages and refer to the legal section that specializes in lawyers of different types. You will want to focus on finding lawyers that specialize in asbestos and mesothelioma cases. You may have to call more than a few of the Yellow Page ad listings to find a lawyer that best suits your needs.

2. Look online for an asbestos lawsuit lawyer:
The Internet is loaded with websites that provide directories for lawyers that specialize in all types of cases. The best bet is to do a search for lawyer directory or lawyer listings in one of the popular search engines such as Google.

3. Contact a law firm for referrals:
Another good strategy for finding a qualified asbestos lawyer is to set up an appointment or make a phone call to a number of law firms. Although it is possible that the lawyer you speak with is not a specialist in asbestos related lawsuits, the networking amongst lawyer provides a probable chance that the lawyer will know how to refer you to.

Windows XP Revisited - Teaching the Faithful Old Dog Some New Tricks

Just lately it seems to be the fashion amongst writers on the internet to compare and criticise operating systems. While one user talks up the merits of Ubuntu Linux versus Windows Vista on her blog, another is quick to criticise Ubuntus lack of user friendly features and available software. In this article I am here to sing the praises of the old dog Windows XP. Once the all singing all dancing multimedia darling, XP is now the older brother of the much younger and trendier Windows Vista. While Vista can be the life and soul of the party, it is still very much a problem child for many users who are frustrated with incompatibilities, poor driver support and degraded performance in multimedia applications and games. If, like me, your Vista experience wasn't all you hoped it would be, read on as we take another look at Windows XP and find that you really can teach an old dog some new tricks.

Security

One of the biggest shocks long time Windows users had to face when upgrading to Vista was the new security measures, specifically User Account Controls. Microsoft's answer to the problem of rampant malware on Windows machines was a barrage of security checks which can quickly become daunting. While emulating this feature might seem like a bad idea, UAC is a partial solution to a very sticky problem and the alternative, allowing malware to continue to spread unhindered, is not really an option. Although you can't have Vista style user account control under XP, there are a number of alternatives. An aggressive firewall product such as Outpost firewall not only monitors internet traffic but also alerts you when programs misbehave or perform potentially dangerous operations. Outpost costs $39.95 per year and includes a regularly updated spyware scanner.

Sudown is similar to UAC and allows you to temporarily elevate the privileges on a limited account to that of an administrator account in order to run programs such as installers. Sudown is less intrusive than UAC but arguably less secure and less complete (you may find that you still have to log into the administrators account under some conditions). Sudown is a free utility and is available from sourceforge.

Windows Explorer

Windows explorer featured several significant upgrades in Vista. Handling of photographs and multimedia files was improved and search was fully integrated. Breadcrumbs were introduced, this is a somewhat bizarre name Microsoft gave to their new windows explorer extension that allows for convenient browsing between directories and subdirectories.

While you cannot reproduce the Windows Vista explorer completely, you can actually go one better. Directory Opus is the most powerful file manager/explorer on the planet and works extremely well with Windows XP. If a little intimidating at first, most users will quickly learn to appreciate the power and flexibility this utility offers. Surpassing Vistas new Windows Explorer in almost every department and with powerful photo/multimedia features, Directory Opus really is worth the learning curve and there are many comprehensive tutorials available on the internet to help ease new users in. Directory Opus costs around $70 per licence. If you want to learn more about this superb utility then start here.

Search

Windows Vistas integrated desktop search is one of my favourite new features in the operating system. Here, XP lags a little behind its younger sibling but it isnt an entirely lost cause. Many users do not realise, but Microsoft Desktop Search is also available for free for Windows XP. While it lacks the slick integration with Windows Explorer, it is still a powerful tool. You can download Desktop Search for XP here.

Looking to really get organised? Desktop search is good, but many of us have piles of CD-R or DVD-R disks kicking around our workplaces. Wouldn't it be great if there was something that could neatly catalogue all those files too? Well, there is. The aptly named WhereIsIt? is able to neatly organise and catalogue not only files on your hard disk but files stashed away on removable disks too. WhereIsIt? Is shareware, with the full version costing $39.95 per licence. Enter WhereIsIt into Google to find out more.

Look and Feel

For those systems able to run it, the new Aero interface in Windows Vista is both fast and beautiful. By comparison, the blues and creams of Windows XP look distinctly last generation. Of course, beauty is only skin deep and what really matters is functionality. That said, a little more eye candy obviously appeals to a lot of people, since numerous web-sites and utilities have sprung up for Windows XP with the sole aim of making the operating system look better. The pinnacle of these utilities is the Object Desktop suite from Stardock. With a few clicks you can instantly transform your XP desktops look and feel into any of hundreds of visual styles available for download from Stardocks website. Want Aero-like special effects on Windows XP? Object Desktop Window FX can do them and you can even customise exactly which visual effects to use. Want two start menus? No problem, with Objectbar you can do that too. Want Windows Dreamscene animated wallpapers? Well sorry, you are out of luck this time. The price for all this desktop pimping? $49.95. To find out more, or download a trial version, enter object desktop into Google. All this talk of desktop enhancements brings us nicely on to:-

Sidebar and Widgets

Windows Vista comes with its own sidebar with detachable widgets, but sidebars and widgets are old news in Windows (and indeed in most other modern operating systems too). My favourite XP sidebar is the somewhat unoriginally named Desktop Sidebar. This sidebar is highly configurable, uncluttered and includes the best RSS news reader/ticker out of all the sidebars and widgets I have ever tried. In fact I even run Desktop Sidebar in preference to Vistas own sidebar on my Windows Vista installation. Google search for desktop sidebar to find out more.

If widgets are you thing then there are currently several competing standards. The Open Widget Engine is gaining momentum slowly, with the aim of one day uniting the efforts of widget makers across the world. Until that day comes, you can choose between Google Desktop, Desktop X and Yahoo Widgets. Desktop X is a powerful widget engine that is included as part of the Object Desktop suite that I mentioned in the Look and Feel section. Yahoo and Googles respective offerings are free and hence much more popular. Yahoo widgets probably includes the best selection of widgets out of all the widget engines available. Again, do a quick Google search on the program that interests you the most to find out more.

Media Centre

Windows XP media centre edition has been around for a while now, but an upgrade to Vista Ultimate or Home Premium will give you full media centre capabilities included in the price. If you are using vanilla XP home or Professional and you want media centre capabilities, they are available for free in the shape of Media Portal, an open source and highly configurable media centre application. Also free and worth a look (at least if you are American) is Yahoo Go For TV. Based on Meedio, which was one of the best commercial media centre products for Windows, Go For TV seems to have been left to stagnate since Yahoo took control. Nevertheless there are already a wide range of plug-ins and accessories available for it that were previously developed for Meedio. Bizarrely, Yahoo currently insists on locking out all users outside of the United States, so if you live elsewhere in the world, give this one a miss. Set Google hunting for media portal or Yahoo Go for TV to find out more.

Games and Direct X 10

As any PC gamer will tell you, XP is (at the time of writing) the best operating system for games. With Vista, Microsoft introduced DirectX10 and made it Vista only. A number of breathtaking DirectX 10 games are regularly plastered over the preview pages on major PC gaming websites and magazines. To date however, aside from a few update patches for older games, Microsofts cutting edge games for DirectX10/Vista basically consist of Shadowrun (an above average multiplayer FPS) and Halo 2 (A conversion of an old Xbox game). Re-hashing a previous generation console title to demonstrate your bleeding edge graphics technology must have made sense to someone in Microsoft but it makes little sense to gamers assessing if an upgrade to Vista is worth their money, especially in light of the performance handicap or crippled sound that some games exhibit under Vista. However, like every new gaming platform, fast forward to Christmas and XP gamers can expect to be enviously eyeing up the new Vista only games starting to appear. If you are hoping that Im going to tell you now some way of getting DirectX 10 to work on XP, you are going to be disappointed. A company called Falling Leaf systems claims to be working on some sort of project that would accomplish this feat, but they still have a lot to prove especially considering early versions struggled to run the most basic of DirectX 10 demo code. Unfortunately, it looks like DirectX 10 is one trick that XP isnt going to be performing any time soon, if ever.

So there you have it, far from being on its last legs, Windows XP is still a very capable operating system with a fair few tricks up its sleeve. If youre willing to invest in a little new software mentioned in this article (much of which also works under Vista) you can easily transform your XP into a top notch operating system and still enjoy your old games and multimedia software.

Senior Living Facility - You Get To Choose

Many people approaching retirement age develop a strong sense of things left undone and plan their retirement around getting them accomplished. Returning to school, taking up a new hobby, writing their memoirs, setting aside newly available time to spend with their grandchildren, or traveling are just some of the things they may do as retirees.

And one way a senior can maximize the available to accomplish all those things left undone is to decide to join a senior living facility, and be freed of the responsibility of caring for a home.

With the oldest member of the Baby Boomer generation--the largest in history--now having reached retirement age, providing for the needs of senior citizens has become big business, and senior living facilities are multiplying rapidly in anticipation of getting their share. They are all competing for a piece of a very large pie, those seniors thinking of residing in a senior living facility can use the competition to their advantage.

Retiring seniors will be able to choose a senior living facility from among from independent living retirement communities, or assisted care or nursing homes. And because there are so many options, seniors have every right to review services and amenities offered by the ones in their areas, to determine which is best suited for their individual needs.

Do They Meet Your Needs?

Choosing a local senior living facility is really no different than looking for a single-family home; the expense, security, comfort, and the attractiveness of a location are all important factors in the decision. The seniors looking for retirement facilities should have a clear idea of the positive and negative aspects of each locating they visit, making a record of the staff qualifications, whether they offer meals, housekeeping, and transportation, whether or not there is medical assistance readily available, and the number of social, athletic, and educational opportunities each provides.

Does the senior living facility encourage seniors to remain as independent as they can, and provide them with the opportunities to do so? Is the staff interested in keeping the residents physically fit, or do they simply assume that aging is a slippery slope and that increasing physical frailty cannot be slowed?

Deciding factors

If, after making you onsite visits, you know that the senior living facility you choose will be one of only a couple you can then use other criteria to determine your choice. Expense will be the deciding factor for a great many people, all other things being equal. But some may choose based on the proximity of the facility to family or friends, whether or not they allow pets, or even how close they are to favorite activities like golfing or shopping.

A senior living facility may be the final home for many of its residents. With that in mind, dont wattle for anything less than the place from which you can embark on your retirement adventures knowing that its the one place to which youll be happiest to return!

How To Choose Good Value Travel Insurance

Travel insurance provides coverage against financial and other losses that you may incur while traveling domestically or internationally. You can either get it at the time of booking your trip, for the exact length of the trip or you can get it for a longer period. Travel agents, travel insurance companies, cruise lines, or tour operators can all help you with purchase of continuous travel insurance.

Here's a list of some of the most common risks that are covered by travel insurance:

- Cancellations and/or Curtailments;
- Delayed departures for flights, and other modes of travel;
- Loss, theft or damage to personal belonging and money including travel documents;
- Delay or loss of baggage;
- Medical expenses/Sickness;
- Emergency evacuation/repatriation;
- Overseas funeral expenses;
- Accidental death, injury or disability benefit;
- Legal assistance for travel related needs;
- Personal liability;
- Loss of income due to other reasons.

Some travel insurance companies have travel policies, which will also provide you extra coverage for additional price. However, these costs vary widely from carrier to carrier. Here's a list of the extra insurance coverage that can be purchased for an additional fee:

- High risk sports (e.g. bungee jumping, scuba diving, sky diving);
- Travel to countries with high risk (e.g. due to civil wars or natural disasters);
- Travel with pre-existing medical conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).

There are several types of policies available depending on your needs. If you travel more than twice a year, then you can avail the option of an annual holiday insurance policy, rather than buying two single travel insurance policies. Some basic types of policies available are:

- Single Trip Cheap Travel Insurance. Perfect for those who take one main holiday annually. It covers single trips anytime in the year with a duration of min. 3 to max. 183 days per trip.

- Annual Multi-Trip Cheap Travel Insurance. If you travel over two times in a year, then this holiday coverage works well for you. Not only do you get flexibility and peace of mind knowing you are covered for each trip, you will also save on money. You can make unlimited trips of up to 45 days each through the year.

- Backpackers Cheap Travel Insurance. Students and backpackers may insure themselves by opting for this insurance type. Travelling to unknown countries and places where you may not even speak the language is a path fraught with danger, but with a travel policy, you'll be secure in the feeling that if you meet with an accident or fall sick, you'll be able to get the necessary medical assistance. It usually covers trips from 31 days to 18 months per trip. Some carriers also include up to 40 Adventure Sports in the policy.

Some of the other travel insurance types are Ski/Snowboarding, Senior Citizen and Long Stay Travel Insurance policies. Choose the best one for you, stay covered, and be stress free on your holidays!

How To Get The Cheapest Car Insurance Quote

The best way to get the cheapest car insurance quote is to contact a specialist insurance broker who will find the cheapest car insurance that is suitable for your needs. The cost of car insurance will be determined by several factors such as, the value of your car, how you use your car, what type of security measures your car has, who owns and drives the car and what type of cover you require.

One way to get the cheapest car insurance quote is to buy a smaller car, as smaller cars are less expensive (and so are valued at less) and have smaller engine sizes. Therefore normally, the insurance is cheaper. Fitting a car alarm, tracker or an immobilizer is one way to bring the cost of your car insurance down due to the more enhanced security you have, the less likely your car will be stolen.

The type of insurance cover you need or want will also play a part in how much your car insurance will be. A specialist broker will be able to advise you on which type of cover is right for you, whether that be Third Party, Third Party Fire and Theft or Fully Comprehensive. Parking your car overnight on a driveway or in a garage will lower your car insurance as it is safer and is less likely to be stolen.

Every year contact a specialist broker to search for the best deal for you, do not just renew your car insurance automatically as just because it was the cheapest deal last year, it doesnt mean it will be the cheapest deal this year.

A specialist broker will be able to search for the cheapest car insurance quote much easier than you can saving you not only a lot of wasted time and money but also giving you the peace of mind that the car insurance you receive is the right deal for you.

David Thomson is Chief Executive of BestDealInsurance an independent specialist broker dedicated to giving consumers the best insurance deal. They offer great value car insurance, ensuring that their clients have the protection they need, without leaving a hole in their pocket.

Knowledge, Education, Learning and Thinking: What Does It All Mean? (Part One)

Compared to what we ought to be, we are only half awake. - William James

Why Think?

Thinking takes place on at least three levels: autonomic, reactive and deliberative. Each involves a specific process that the brain goes through to effect targeted and desired outcomes. While the first two are done without conscious effort, deliberative thinking cannot be done without it. Any one who has tried knows how demanding and draining it can be. Its a process that many of us have a hard time staying in long enough to produce anything different from what we think we already know. Often, at the beginning of the process of deliberative thinking, we shut it down by saying to ourselves, I already know that! This causes the mind to close and interest to wane. When this happens any curiosity we may have regarding the truth about ourselves and the universe does not stimulate us sufficiently to use our minds in the necessary ways to obtain it.

In the context of the work environment, sometimes the work we do doesnt require us to think in order to perform our daily tasks. We are instructed (trained) how to perform our responsibilities and are judged simply by how well we do them. Nothing beyond doing our jobs is requested of us.

Sometimes the work we do requires us not to think in order to do it well. Were told that were not paid to think, just to do our jobs the way we are told to do them. Anything beyond that is unwelcome input. Consequently, many people do not use their ability to think in ways that move them into greater realms of opportunity, creativity and productivity. If its not going to get us anything except a reprimand or a pink slip, why try to think more than we need to?

What about the places where were supposed to learn how to think and the benefits of regularly doing so? Even though most educational systems make noble attempts to instruct students in the ways of thinking well the daily routine and mechanics of teaching eventually overwhelms the best intentions of educators and administrators alike. Students exit from the system with some valuable information but not a very clear understanding of how to knit it all together into a meaningful whole that has beneficial ramifications for both the students and the societies in which they live.

Most of what we do on a daily basis doesnt involve much in the way of our brainpower. Routine and habit are shortcuts to action without thinking. Theyre what you do when youre not thinking about what youre doing. So, why think?

The Purpose of Thinking

The Seventeenth Century French Philosopher, Rene Descartes began his exhaustive investigation into the meaning of life with what to him was the only undeniable fact of life: the human ability to think. The Cartesian method of philosophical inquiry was revolutionary because it was the first to use shared concrete, everyday experiences of life, like thinking, to construct an understanding of the meaning and significance of human existence. Descartes dictum, Cogito, ergo sum, (I think, therefore, I am) was a whole new way of thinking about life by grounding it in thought.

If Descartes is correct that because I can think I therefore exist as a human being, then the question arises, if I know that I am, is this the same as knowing who I am? The answer is no. Just because I know I exist doesnt mean that I know much about myself. Your ability to think gives evidence that you are. The task of actually thinking is to learn who you are and how you can be the Self you were born to be.

Meander, a Fourth Century BC Greek philosopher, said that the basis of civilization was for citizens to know themselves, and that this meant, to get acquainted with what you know and what you can do. He assumes that all human beings have within them, by virtue of their being alive, knowledge born of their unique manifestation of life. In the Eighteenth Century AD, the English poet, philosopher and lexicographer, Dr. Samuel Johnson, would perfectly summarize this philosophy of knowledge when he wrote, human beings need to be reminded more than they need to be taught. The activity of thinking reminds you of what you innately know but have forgotten. Thinking is the process by which you uncover your Self and its potential and by which you discover creative ways to apply what you already know to being your Self within the context of your community of life. When you spend time thinking, you afford yourself the opportunity to get acquainted with your innate knowledge and with what you can do with that self-knowledge.

The Problem of Education

The primary purpose of employing your ability to think, therefore, is not merely to exist but to exist in a specific, unique way. How this is done depends on how the individual is taught to think. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), one of the foremost thinkers of the Enlightenment, remarked, science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life. He described his approach to education as organizing life when he said, the science I teach is how one might occupy his proper place in the universe. He was undoubtedly aware of the ancient teaching of Confusius: Do not worry about holding high position; worry rather about playing your proper role.

The best teachers I had throughout my formal education and beyond were those who not just caused me to think but who helped me to learn the purpose of thinking. Thinking was not done merely to arrive at solutions to problems and answers to questions but was to be done to know myself and to learn how to be myself in the world as a unique presence. Knowing myself through thinking leads to acting as that unique Self and not as a mimic of any other even though some, if not all of my actions might be similar to others in appearance and outcomes.

John Ruskin, a Nineteenth Century English social critic, said, Education does not mean teaching people to know what they do not know; it means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. A good education teaches you how to use your ability to think so that you can behave in the ways that emanate from your uniqueness as a person and that consequently lead to your being a success as that person. Thinking shapes, directs and expands the capacity to behave in the particular ways that lead to personal accomplishment and significance.

In modern times, especially in Western education models, students are seen as proverbial empty vessels sitting at the feet of fuller, older, wiser, learned professional educators who empty their knowledge into those empty heads thereby filling them with what somebody else knows. During the socialization process of teaching children how to exist in a particular culture, the system of education serves to provide the psychological structures for social homogenization by imparting the wisdom of the ages, knowledge handed down from previous generations and that is deemed that everyone should know. This most certainly is a vital function of education. However, when this approach becomes the primary emphasis of education, as it most often appears to be in academic institutions throughout the West, it translates into teaching students what, not how to think.

The late 19th early 20th Century English philosopher, mathematician, and writer, Bertrand Russell, was no fan of formal educational systems and said so when he commented that education was one of the chief obstacles to intelligence and freedom of thought and that men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education. He would agree that much of what passes for education is nothing more than the simple transmission by others of what they believe is important for students to be taught which often has nothing to do with the learners. His comment suggests that he saw the main purpose of contemporary formal education to be to mold children and young adults into an image that conformed to and reflected the prevailing culture. Education was the process by which people became like each other instead of becoming their unique Selves.

Russell would concur that content often lacks context, meaning that teaching frequently doesnt involve instructing students how to determine the veracity, viability, worthiness and usefulness of what is learned. It winds up being mere data dumping with little, if any attempt to help students connect the dots among the enormous array of data being offered from multiple sources and perspectives. Ben Hecht (1893-1964), an American author and dramatist, described the significance of context well: Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock. The education process is filled with billions of seconds and pieces of information that, all being emphasized as important to know, serve more to cloud than clarify the meaning of time and what happens within it. It emphasizes the threads not the tapestry, the parts not the whole.

John Locke (1632-1704), the British philosopher and medical researcher, wrote, till a man can judge whether they be truths or not, his understanding is but little improved, and thus men of much reading, though greatly learned, but may be little knowing. If thinking is taught to be the process by which the thinker is able to accurately discern right from wrong, truth from falsity, authenticity from disingenuineness, then merely learning new information is not the way this can be done. Locke intimates how we can learn to judge whether they be truths or not when he penned, reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.

Reading is an indispensable method of education. However, as Albert Einstein observed, reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), English writer and dean of the Monarchs advisory council, agreed with such sentiment when he wrote, reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought. So reading, an essential means of education, can be a detriment to creative thinking. (I hope this is not the case as you read this article!).

The problem is that formal education offers no heuristic that students might use to organize and focus their thinking about everything they learn or to help them discover how to practically apply what they learn to the adventure of living. How often did I scurry between classes in college going from biology to philosophy, physics to religious studies, psychology to sociology knowing the content of the courses but without understanding how they all might be mutually corroborative and collaborative in providing a comprehensive foundation for innovative thinking about how to better live and enjoy my life? It took at least a couple of decades for me to even begin to appreciate the intrinsic symbiosis of the volumes of knowledge I had acquired throughout my higher education experience. Today, a couple of decades later still, my thinking is consumed with and consummated by discovering the interconnections among the pieces of information I have floating around in my head as I attempt to purposefully link the data dots into the big picture of my personal reality. This is more than mere data mining, it is data melding. It is this principle of information integration that should, but often does not, guide all educational endeavors.

Commenting on the rapid profusion of information throughout the early Twentieth Century, the American poet, e e cummings, paraphrasing a verse from Samuel Taylor Coleridges The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, put it succinctly when he wrote, data, data everywhere but not a thought to think. Without the context, the big picture, the organizing principles of how to coordinate and use what we know, whatever we know will only take us away from ourselves by pointing to all that is outside us as the means of finding ourselves and the purpose of our lives. Our proper place in the universe is obscured and eludes us because weve not been provided, or have not diligently pursued the proper context within which all of what we know can be brought together to make our lives sensible and centered.

We cannot occupy a place we have not recognized as ours alone to occupy. Nor can we properly occupy that unique place until we have properly prepared ourselves with authentic, honest, abiding self-knowledge. Formal education, by providing massive amounts of asynchronous, external information, unwittingly becomes the chief cause of the obfuscation and cluttering up of the Self. Self-knowledge gets lost amidst the din of seemingly competing voices and ideas. Consequently, the Self becomes disjointed, disharmonious and disquieted for it has not found its proper place in the universe. It becomes as a prism refracting the various inputs it receives into even more detailed yet diffused bits of data.

Being overwhelmed with the prospect of learning what we believe we need to know and then applying it appropriately, many of us simply give up trying to think in the ways we could. Ironically, we have been educated out of thinking. Ayn Rand said it perfectly, man's basic vice, the source of all his evils, is the act of unfocusing his mind, the suspension of his consciousness, which is not blindness, but the refusal to see, not ignorance, but the refusal to know.

Can education be directed to actually help human beings find their proper place in the universe? How can we connect the dots of our variegated and vast knowledge? How can we make it all assimilate into a common core of comprehension? Is it possible to turn the education process from an ego-driven give and take (where one ego gives information and other egos esteem themselves on how much they can take and then give back on exams) into a nobler endeavor that edifies by elucidating the humanity with which we must live for the brief while we are alive?

The paradigm that will help us bring it all together and coordinate our fragmented knowledge into clear understanding is the one that guided great civilizations of the past: know yourself first. The constituent elements of knowledge coalesce into a unified whole only after you get acquainted with your innate knowledge about yourself. Then all subsequent information that you acquire will gather to weave the larger tapestry of your unique presence within space and time. Only then will your education experience be as a crucible into which discontinuous data is poured but out of which holistic, useful and beneficial knowledge emerges.

In Part Two of this article you'll learn about the purpose of knowledge and education, where thoughts come from and the best way to think.
