For people to grow and thrive they must play many roles in a variety of situations. The key roles that lead to personal greatness are all focused on what I call the three Ups and an In.

The first UP is to Show Up. Decisions are made and directions are set by the people that show up to play in the game. Far too many people spend too much of their life on the sidelines watching and complaining. By showing up to be an active participant you bring your full focus and abilities to whatever goal the group is striving to achieve.

Showing up however is not enough. So the next important UP is to Stand Up. By leading a consistent and principle centered life individuals have the tools they need to influence the actions of others. By standing up and demonstrating those beliefs through their own actions they provide a model for others to follow. In addition, by clearly articulating that belief there is no room for ambiguity in ones position. Consistent demonstration of what one believes in allows the world to understand the foundation and boundaries of their behaviors related to future actions.

While being present and establishing the principles by which you will make decisions and take action are important, someone has to do the work. The third UP then is obviously Roll Up your sleeves and do some work. Solid beliefs and lofty principles will move society only so far. It is important for each member of society to adopt the twin attitudes of service and stewardship. By viewing our gifts and relationships as opportunities to provide service to one another, while being wise stewards of the gifts we have been given, society will thrive.

There will always be those in our world that are unable to thrive on their own. So, the last important action is an IN. Everyone needs to Pitch In. Charity of spirit, as well as charity of the pocketbook, is called for in our every action. It is all too easy to drop some money in the dish as it passes or write a check at tax time. True charity has to come in the form of compassion and forgiveness. Each day, we all need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, What have I done to make someone elses life better today?
