Becoming a Private Eye

Private investigators work for a multitude of people, both professionals such as banks, lawyers, etc. and ordinary average joes like you or me. They are haired to do pretty much any type of investigating, from following potential criminals to spy on your significant other. They are the professional stalker!

Here are some ways to become a private investigator:

1.Many PIs come from some sort of legal background, mainly from a police force or from the military. They also have degrees ranging from criminal justice, criminology, psychology, or sociology.

2.Next, if you havent done so already, go ahead and enroll in a detective school. Some PI agencies require you to go through a course and ultimately obtain a license.Just because you havent missed an episode of CSI or Law and Order doesnt qualify for experience. Plus, getting hands-on experience is one of the best ways to learn about a subject!

3.Make sure you know how to use a computer. This means being able to browse the internet, using a word precessing program like MS Word, and using spreadsheet software like MS Excel. If you dont know how to do these, I suggest that you enroll in a computer basics course or have a buddy show you the ropes.

4.Lastly, try to brush up on your writing skills because you are going to need them! A large percentage of your job will involve writing reports for your client. It wont be much help to you or your client if he or she cant understand what you are saying or if your report is too generic.

Here are some simple tips for you to get started:

a.As with any job, try to fulfill all of the requirements. This is important! If an examination is required, do so.

b.You need to be strict in discipline and conservative. You must also exercise a lot of patience as you will bee following somebody even through the less spectacular parts of their routines.

c.This is job based strictly on clientele. There will eventually come a time when yo wont get any cases, so be prepared to compensate for such times.

d.You are going to meet and interact with new people, so hone your speech skills and polish up your charisma. Nobody will want to hire you if you are not confident in your work or if you dont look professional.

e.Consider getting an office in a nearby complex or setting up a home office. This ties in with your professional image. If you opt for a home office, Make a designated room in your office where you can work with your clients so as to not be disturbed by outside interference (kids, tv, stereo, etc.). It also looks better if you can talk to your clients without them having to look at your unmade bed, or the dishes from last nights three layer casserole.

With the James Bond-like qualities comes the downside:

-Be prepared to fly solo. You will be working alone for much of the time. Plus, less people attracts less attention.

-Be prepared to work at irregular hours. You might be tailing the suspect at 3pm only to have to follow him again at 4am the next morning.

-Becoming a PI isnt open to anyone with a criminal background. Only those who are clean may be granted a license.

Being a private investigator is work, but the rewards are very satisfying. Hopefully these hints give you a peek on how the become a private investigator.
